The tributes have been pouring in since the tragic news broke, with Doherty’s Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano now releasing a statement to EW in which she acknowledges their “complicated relationship” before saying Doherty was someone she “deeply respected.”
“It’s no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship, but at its core was someone I deeply respected and was in awe of. She was a talented actress, beloved by many, and the world is less without her. My condolences to all who loved her.”
Doherty and Milano were joined by Holly Marie Combs in the hit fantasy drama series from The WB. However, while they played close sisters on screen, the issues between the co-stars have been much-publicized, with both Doherty and Combs having said that Milano played a major part in them eventually being fired from the show, with Doherty’s character, Prue, leaving at the end of season 3 and being replaced with Rose McGowan as long-lost half-sister Paige.

Doherty sadly died after a battle with cancer, with the actress having first been diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2015. The actress, who was also known for the likes of Heathers, Beverly Hills, 90210, BH90210, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Mallrats, passed away at her home in Malibu, California. At the time, her publicist, Leslie Sloane, released the following statement:
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.”
Kevin Smith Thanks Shannen Doherty for Getting Mallrats Greenlit
Mallrats director Kevin Smith has also now paid tribute to Doherty, taking to social media to thank her for getting his sophomore comedy greenlit and saying he will “cherish the memories” he has of the actress.
“Shannen was a true talent and she became a good friend, but lest anyone forget, she was the only reason Mallrats got green-lit in 1995. That’s because Shannen was one of the most famous people on the planet – and the fact that she picked Mallrats as her first follow-up to 90210 *made* that movie happen. I cherish the memories of Shannen walking her German Shepherd around the @edenprairiecenter every morning, or whenever she’d gossip and giggle between takes. At the junket for Rats, we established a ritual we kept up for years, where she wrote ‘dick’ over my half of our @filmthreat cover while I wrote ‘bitch’ over her pic.
But while Shannen was no shrinking violet and she gave as good as she got (particularly to the paparazzi), she was never anything but sweet to me. I told her back in December when I was on her podcast that I felt like the girl I used to watch on TV at Quick Stop was there to welcome me when I got into show business. Fuck… She’s died way too soon. I already miss you, Do-Do. Thank you for going to the Mall with me – and for thirty years of friendship. My Canadian pal was right: you are (and always will be) an American icon.”
Shannen Doherty will be sorely missed by many, and you can read further tributes to the actress from both colleagues and fans below.
