Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith recently sat down with Drumeo to talk about his collaboration with the pop singer Dua Lipa. Smith appeared on the studio version of Dua Lipa’s 2020 hit ‘Break My Heart’ to play the drum part of the song. In the recent video, the drummer shared the process and how the whole situation occurred. He said:
“My friend Andrew Watt is quite the producer extraordinaire, and he was working with Dua Lipa. I came down, and they were just finishing up the session, they’d just kind of written everything, pretty much. Andrew was like, ‘I’m so glad you’re here! We were just talking about how this song needs live drums!’ I’m like, ‘Here we go! Great!’”
Smith also made it clear that he didn’t try to shine and just tried to play the drums and do his thing:
“In a situation where you’re the artist’s ‘band’, if it’s a singer, you’re just trying to do whatever they need or want to help make it feel good. There’s no… I’m not trying to get my thing in there at all.”
This isn’t the first instance of him playing drums for a pop singer. Smith also played for Halsey, Charlie Puth, Lana Del Rey, and Charlie XCX. Additionally, he collaborated with Miley Cyrus for her take on Metallica’s ‘Nothing Else Matters.’
