AC/DC fans might misinterpret Black Midi frontman Geordie Greep’s words on Angus Young.
The singer recently joined a conversation with Total Guitar and revealed that AC/DC has influenced their sound. Greep noted that artists often change and transform their influences into something new by giving Young as an example:
“If you played AC/DC to a hardcore Chuck Berry fan back in the day, they wouldn’t have liked it, mistaking it for noise. Sure, Angus is trying to play like Chuck Berry and old blues guitarists like that, but he doesn’t sound like them. It became his own thing.”
In the rest of the interview, Geordie also gave Jimi Hendrix as another example by saying that he had created his own version of the blues. So, his style turned into something else despite the influence.
What Is Greep’s Favorite AC/DC Album?
Back in 2022, Greep sat down with the Quietus and listed his favorite albums. AC/DC’s ‘If You Want Blood You Got It’ was his fourth choice. He said the following about the record:
“I first heard this when I was a kid, there was all sorts of classic rock stuff around. My dad loved it. I hadn’t listened to AC/DC in years, until a little while ago. Me and Morgan [Simpson] were in the car with this guy Sizzle, who we work with, and we were playing songs in the car. We asked him what he’d been listening to, and he said ‘If You Want Blood, You’ve Got It.’ We were cracking up, saying, ‘fair play.’ But he said: ‘Nah, nah. Listen. It’s the best album of all time.’ He put it on and it all just came back to me, I’d forgotten just how good it was.”
He continued talking about the album:
“‘If You Want Blood, You’ve Got It’ is the sound of a great live band at their absolute peak. It’s just great songs, done well. The guitars, drums, and vocals are all perfectly balanced. There’s no messing around. Even Angus Young, while he’s doing these spectacularly showy guitar solos, is never out of place – he always fits them perfectly into the song, no noodling around.”
Black Midi released their latest album, ‘Hellfire’ in July 2022. The band currently has no scheduled concerts.
