Green Day Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong recently shared a picture from his youth with his older brother. He admitted that they often jammed together back in the day and they wanted to be like Van Halen.
“This is my big brother David. He’s cool dude to say the least,” the rocker shared on Instagram. “We shared a bedroom so hes probably my first roommate. Great athlete. Also a damn fine drummer. He jammed with me and Mike back in the day… We wanted to be like Van Halen! Some day we should record something together. Love you brother.”
Many fans pointed out that it was actually an Oasis reference.
Armstrong said during interviews that Van Halen was his favorite band growing up. The two guitarists, Armstrong and Eddie Van Halen, actually met each other. However, it was way more emotional than Armstrong expected.
“First, we went back and I met [Eddie’s son Wolfgang], who was super cool, and then they were like, ‘Do you want to meet Eddie?’ and I was like, ‘Oh my God,’” the singer said during an interview. “And so he’s back there, and he’s got his guitar on, he’s plugged in, and it’s like he’s talking to me and shredding at the same time, and I was just like, ‘Oh my God!’”
The rocker mentioned that he noticed Eddie had ‘gigantic’ hands. “I grabbed his hands and I looked at them, and I was like, ‘Dude, your hands are so…’ He’s like, ‘Oh I got arthritis now and blah blah blah.’ And then, like, this really insane thing happened, where he kind of started crying.”
“He looked at me, and he put his hand behind my neck, and he goes, ‘You’re the only one that understands me.’ He had tears coming down his eyes. I didn’t really know what to say,” he added.
Green Day is currently on tour. The band will be performing at Comerica Park in Detroit on September 4, and the tour is scheduled to end in Yokohama, Japan, on February 26.
