Beyoncé released her new country album ‘Cowboy Carter’ on March 29. One of the songs, ‘Bodyguard,’ nods to the heavy metal scene with a mention of mosh pits in the lyrics.
The eighth track from the record delves into the idea of emotional and physical protection towards a love interest. The opening lines to its second verse read:
“Be your best friend
I protect you in the mosh pit
And I’ll defend you in the gossip
You know how people like to start sh*t and pop sh*t.”
A Mix Of References
‘Cowboy Carter’ leans heavily into the country music. Its 27 tracks touch on different cultural elements across different genres. The album features a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Blackbird,’ a new rendition of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene,’ and sees contributions from Post Malone, Willie Nelson, and Miley Cyrus.
‘Bodyguard’ likely refers to Beyoncé’s relationship with Jay-Z. The pop singer previously revealed that every song on ‘Cowboy Carter’ was also influenced by a different Western film like ‘The Hateful Eight,’ ‘Space Cowboys,’ and ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon.’
