We spoke with veteran actor Edward James Olmos leading up to the release of his new film One Fast Move, which sees him as a retired motorcycle racer and proud owner of a local bike shop that employs a couple of aspiring pro riders. Olmos has starred in other acclaimed projects over the years (from Blade Runner and Miami Vice to Stand and Deliver and Coco), perhaps most notably Battlestar Galactica from 2004 to 2009. Years later, TV buffs still regard it as one of the best series to ever hit the small screen, and Olmos thinks it all comes down to the story.
“Ronald Moore wrote an extraordinary story, and he used the world to be able to inform us of who we are as people and where the future is,” Olmos told MovieWeb, adding:
“[You can] look at it and say, ‘Come on, you think that’s our future?’ Yeah, it could easily be one, if
Musk has his way and builds millions of robots to take over access of jobs
that we’re doing in manual labor and assembly lines and digging and working, and his robots can do that. You know, people will be using them because they’re cheaper, and you can work them 24/7.”
“All of the issues that we have about understanding our future come into play in Battlestar,” continued Olmos. “And if you watch the whole five years of episodes, you’ll see that. Boy, you just better hope that people understand it. This story that they did was fantastic, and it’s the best usage of television I’ve been a part of.”

Edward James Olmos on ‘How Incredibly Difficult It Is to Live Your Dream’
One Fast Move stars Eric Dane and KJ Apa, while Edward James Olmos plays retired racer Abel, a mentor to both their troubled characters in the film. “They’re all dysfunctional, and the most dysfunctional one is Abel,” said Olmos. “He’s the oldest and the wisest, but also has gone through so much damage in his life. And you learn about it, and you see how incredibly difficult it is to live your dream.” He continued:
At the same time, while pursuing your dream, you have to understand that defining moments in your life change your dream and change you as a human being. And it really deals with self-respect and self-esteem and self-worth.
Those who would never get on a motorcycle can at least sit back and enjoy One Fast Move for bringing us into the tough world of bike racers, with all its training and dangerous practice circuits. “It’s a world that not too many people know about,” explained Olmos, “a very fast, fast, fast world where these kids are riding around, 100 miles an hour on the track.” He added:
“It’s one thing to practice this — ‘How do you practice this?’ You’ll see how they go out in the field and they practice, the work that they have to do. But when you go competitive, it’s like, ‘What are you talking about?’ It was bad enough just doing it by yourself and trying to get around as fast as you can from point A to point B. But try to go as fast you can from point A to point B with other people wanting to go just as fast, if not faster, so that they win? It’s really intense.”
