Dark Matter, the Apple TV+ science fiction thriller starring Joel Edgerton, has been renewed for Season 2. The miniseries that’s no longer a miniseries is based on the novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, who was also commissioned as a showrunner by Apple. It arrived in May 2024 on the platform, and quickly garnered audience acclaim. It was only a matter of time before Apple and Sony would see the potential for a follow-up.
Crouch announced the unexpected renewal with very kind words for the series’ genre-loving audience:
“Thanks to everyone who tuned-in for season one — book fans and new fans — and of course our partners at Apple and Sony, my amazing producing partner, Matt Tolmach, our tremendous cast and crew, and the great city of Chicago—you were so good to us. In the process of writing and filming season one, we discovered that there’s so much more story to tell, and we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters as they fight for survival and to find their way home through a landscape of mind-bending realities. See you in the Box!”

By “Box,” Crouch means the unique object that served as a groundbreaking portal in Season 1 of Dark Matter, and which characters used to surf around alternate realities. Tolmach added his appreciation of the sci-fi drama and how it appealed to worldwide audiences:
“Making
Dark Matter
was a longtime dream, and I’m so proud to see Blake’s vision come to life and to connect with so many people. Seeing the
Dessens’ journey
resonate with audiences has been extremely gratifying, and we can’t wait to bring more of this world — and others — to life in season two. Huge thanks to Apple TV+, Sony and our amazing cast and crew. Here we go!”
Dark Matter stars Joel Edgerton alongside Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Amanda Brugel, and Oakes Fegley. Crouch led a team of writers and directors who thoroughly followed the plot of the author’s bestselling novel, which is considered one of the best works in modern science fiction. Season 1 was positively received by both critics and audiences, and the series holds a score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes for both the Tomatometer and the Audience Score.
Dark Matter is a Perfect Example of the Multiverse Theme
One of the best sci-fi shows of 2024, Dark Matter tells the story of a physicist named Jason Dessen (Edgerton) who gets abducted and beaten up by a stranger. As it turns out, Jason has been taken by another version of himself, and that alternate version sends Jason to another reality, while the alternate replaces Jason in this one. Now, the good Jason will have to find a way to enter the Box again and navigate through several multiverses in order to return to his family before the bad Jason convinces everyone he’s not an impostor.

Dark Matter’s Blake Crouch corrects his own novel for Apple TV+, prioritizing scientific accuracy over dramatic effect.
The show is a great execution of the genre in Apple TV’s catalog, which also includes sci-fi gems like Severance, Silo, Invasion, and Foundation. Per Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+: “The thought-provoking and gripping Dark Matter has quickly become a global hit, capturing audiences’ imaginations and making it a beloved and integral part of Apple’s world-class sci-fi line up. We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Blake Crouch, our partners at Sony and the rest of the creative team and cast on a new season that will captivate viewers with more twists and turns as we dive deeper into the mysteries of the multiverse.”
