If it can be said, and Anthony Mackie has said it, the new Captain America has “made a lot of dudes famous.” At least that’s the claim he’s sticking with in a new video titled “Anthony Mackie’s Memories.”
One of the fellas he claims to have given the good ol’ Mackie Bump to in the Entertainment Weekly video? Ryan Gosling. As in, Mickey Mouse Club‘s Ryan Gosling. Are You Afraid of the Dark? star Ryan Gosling. Young Hercules star Ryan Gosling. The Notebook‘s Ryan Gosling.
Why Does Anthony Mackie Say He Made Ryan Gosling Famous?
In the charming and funny 14-minute clip filled with truly fascinating anecdotes, the actor goes through almost his entire filmography to share silly, one-of-a-kind stories from his time working on various sets, and reflects on the career he’s made for himself while also making other dudes famous.
“You know I made this guy famous,” Mackie says jokingly, pointing to Gosling’s face on the poster for their 2013 film, Gangster Squad — the second time the two men appeared on-screen together. “We did his first movie together.”
“That boy is wild. True story — ask him!” – Anthony Mackie
The movie in question — 2006’s Half Nelson — was not actually Gosling’s first film (lest we forget, The Notebook came out in 2004, and Remember the Titans was a 2000 flick. Sorry to call you out like this, man), but Mackie isn’t completely in the wrong with his assertion here, either. Half Nelson was the first film to land Ryan Gosling an Oscar nomination, so one could argue it was the film that legitimized the once and future Ken doll his career.
But that doesn’t mean Gosling didn’t behave like the soon-to-be, thrice-nominated Oscar contender. According to Mackie, Gosling is a bit, well, gross, by his standards, as he recounted an improvised moment involving The Fall Guy and a feral cat.

Though his exterior is that of a grumpy old man, Harrison Ford seems to be one of the most wholesome Hollywood celebrities out there.
“So we shot that in New York. We were in Brooklyn one day, we were out by the docks … and a cat comes over,” Mackie explains in the clip. “Nobody knew where this cat was from, nobody checked this cat, nobody vasectosized this cat. Where is this cat from?”
He went on to add that, in a moment that ended up on screen, “Ryan picks up the cat, nuzzles it, and starts rubbing the cat. And I’m like, ‘Yo, you’re gonna catch something!’ That cat was nasty. It was like mangy. It looked like a creature in the ‘Thriller’ video with Michael Jackson. That’s how it was walking.”
Continuing to emphasize his horror, Mackie exclaimed, “He picked that sh*t up, man! He picked that sh*t up! That boy is wild. True story — ask him!”
The whole video is a delightful watch — Anthony Mackie has truly been in so many films over the years, you’d be forgiven for forgetting the totality of his lengthy resume. But you wouldn’t be forgiven for not checking out the clip above, because who doesn’t love charming behind-the-scenes stories that tell on other actors he’s worked with? One even involves crossing an international border on a camel!
Take that, Spider-Man!
