The beloved 90s sitcom The Drew Carey Show is finally available to stream online, much to the delight of its devoted fans. After years of navigating hurdles, viewers can now binge all nine seasons of the show for absolutely no charge on Plex, which is an ad-supported streaming service. This marks the first time the series has been accessible on a streaming platform.
Drew Carey has worked tirelessly to bring the show online so that it can be a nostalgic trip down memory lane for long-time fans and a new experience for first-time viewers. In a June interview with TV Insider, he revealed the challenges he was facing in the process of securing the rights to stream the series.
“It’s not in syndication… because of music rights and stuff. We’re going to try to change that around and get it back out there…. It’s pretty funny, and a lot of it’s kind of timeless. It was weird, [too]. [The cast and creators] were all Mad Magazine fans and stuff, so we weren’t afraid to go bananas.”
The Drew Carey Show, created by Carey and Bruce Helford, premiered in 1995 and ran for nine seasons until 2004. It centered around Drew Carey’s character, a fictionalized version of himself working as an assistant manager at Winfred-Louder department store in Cleveland, Ohio. The sitcom featured a talented ensemble that included Ryan Stiles, Diedrich Bader, Christa Miller, Kathy Kinney, and Craig Ferguson.
Usually capturing Drew’s everyday trials and tribulations at work and in his personal life, The Drew Carey Show also highlighted the lives of his core group of friends. Stiles played Lewis, an unambitious friend of Drew’s, Bader was the dimwitted Oswald, and Miller portrayed Drew’s on-off girlfriend, Kate. Another memorable character who became iconic because of her outrageous personality is Kinney’s Mimi Bobeck, Drew’s antagonistic co-worker. All of this combined in exactly the right mix for a hit sitcom.
