Meghan Markle isn’t the only American who can consider herself part of European royalty. On Saturday, September 28, 2024, Princess Theodora of Greece married American Matthew Kumar, a Los Angeles-based lawyer, in a Greek Orthodox ceremony. His Eminence Metropolitan of Syros, Dorotheos II led the couple’s nuptials, which took place at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation in Athens. After announcing their engagement on November 16, 2018, the couple rescheduled their big day twice, People reports. They were originally scheduled to say “I do” in May of 2020, before postponing their ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple later pushed their second wedding date, slated for January 2023, due to the death of the bride’s father, the late King Constantine.
However, the couple was clearly unwavering in their plan to be married in Greece. “The couple’s desire to have their wedding in Athens reflects their love for Greece, the strong ties they maintain with the country and their desire to share Greek culture and hospitality and identity with their guests,” an official statement said. The announcement also noted that the bride’s brothers, Crown Prince Pavlos, Prince Nikolaos, and Prince Philippos, served as groomsmen for the occasion. Some of the princess’ nieces and nephews were also named bridesmaids and groomsmen for the nuptials, including Princess Maria-Olympia, Prince Achilleas-Andreas, and Arrietta Morales de Grecia. The bride’s mother, Queen Anne-Maire, as well as other famous royals, including Queen Sofia of Spain and Princess Benedicte of Denmark, also attended the ceremony. While the bride is the goddaughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II, no members of the British royal family were reported to be in attendance at the wedding.
For her big day, the bride selected a bardot-neckline dress from a Greek designer, Celia Krithariot. She paired her wedding dress with the Khedive of Egypt tiara and the Connaught lace veil, which had been previously worn by four queens on their own wedding days, according to Hello!. Wearing her hair in a half-up, half-down style, the princess let her blonde hair fall behind her shoulders. Following the ceremony, the couple and their guests celebrated with an after-wedding dinner at the One and Only Aesthesis Hotel, according to Hello!.
While the ceremony took place on Saturday, activities associated with the couple’s wedding week commenced on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, when the bride, groom, and Queen Anne-Marie met with the Archbishop of Athens for a blessing, according to Hello!. Two days later, on Friday, September 27, 2024, the outlet also reported that the couple hosted their pre-wedding party at the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens. The bride opted to wear a white midi-length dress with a square neckline and a dramatic bow on the back for the celebration, while the groom donned a dark suit with a red pocket square.
