Amy Adams, who portrayed Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane in the DC Extended Universe films, has nothing but praise for the next actress set to take on the iconic role. Rachel Brosnahan will step into Lois Lane’s shoes for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman, where she’ll star opposite David Corenswet. Adams, whose latest project Nightbitch has merited talks of a potential seventh Oscar nomination, recently told Variety that she’s looking forward to Brosnahan’s iteration of the beloved character.
“I love her. She’s gonna be great. Hopefully the role will be infused with her sensibility and her natural humor and strength and wit. I’m really looking forward to it. I really like her.”
Adams first portrayed Lois Lane in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013, later reprising the role in the latter DCEU movies Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League (and its “Snyder Cut“). Adams tells the publication that she was not expecting a return to the franchise and “always understood they were moving in a more ‘Justice League’ direction” and that her work in theater taught her that a “role never belongs to you. You just do a take on it. That’s how I feel about that franchise.”
Brosnahan is best known for her Emmy Award-winning performance as Midge Maisel in Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Along with a Primetime Emmy, Brosnahan earned several accolades for the series, including two Golden Globe Awards and two Critics’ Choice Awards. The comedy, which premiered in 2017 and concluded with its fifth season in 2023, follows the titular character, a 1950s New York-based housewife who ventures into the male-dominated world of stand-up comedy after leaving her husband. As Midge Maisel, Brosnahan delivered a strong performance as an intelligent and charismatic woman, something we’re excited to see transfer to her portrayal of Clark Kent’s love interest.
James Gunn’s Superman Sees David Corenswet as the Man of Steel
Brosnahan’s Lois Lane casting made headlines in June 2023 following reports that the actress was one of the frontrunners (alongside Sex Education’s Emma Mackey, Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynacor, and Azrael’s Samara Weaving) in consideration for the role. Brosnahan will star opposite Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman. Gunn has hyped Corenswet’s performance, but the actor will have big shoes to fill as Henry Cavill, who starred as the iconic superhero opposite Adams in the DCE, is a fan favorite.
“Henry was a really brilliant Superman. I offer every Superman luck and stuff, but I think he was great. I just wanted to say that. It’s so in his spirit,” Adams shared.
