Fans excited about the upcoming God of War television series will seemingly have to wait a little longer as the series is undergoing major changes behind the scenes and starting over from scratch. News of a television series broke in March 2022, and while things were originally moving smoothly, the series has hit a major speed bump.
According to Deadline, showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus turned in multiple scripts for God of War before exiting the series. Even though sources told Deadline that Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios were happy with the scripts turned in, they are looking to move the series in a new creative direction. No new showrunner has been announced yet, and a new writers’ room is being considered.
The move certainly is shocking as Rafe Judkins has an overall deal with Amazon Prime Video and is currently the showrunner on Wheel of Time. He also wrote the script for another project based on a PlayStation video game, the feature film Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus were the creators and showrunners of another popular Prime Video series, The Expanse. They also wrote the script for Children of Men, which earned them an Academy Award nomination, and they were part of the team that developed the script for the first Iron Man movie.

12 Actors That Should Play Kratos in the God of War Series
With the God of War video game being announced as an episodic adventure, here are some actors that could play Kratos, the game’s main character.
God of War is a popular video game franchise that began in 2005 and follows Kratos, a Spartan soldier who eventually becomes the God of War after he goes on a quest to kill all the gods in the Olympian pantheon. Later games expanded Kratos’ family and had him fight the Norse Gods. In an attempt to expand its media footprint, Sony has been considering adaptations of popular video games from the PlayStation library, and God of War was at the top of that list.
PlayStation Adaptations Are Taking Over Movies and TV
This is not the first time an adaptation of God of War has run into trouble. Throughout the 2010s, attempts to adapt the game into a feature film struggled to get off the ground. In the 2020s, PlayStation has been pushing for more projects based on their games and has found great success. Riding high off of the massive box office success of Spider-Man : No Way Home, Sony had another hit with Uncharted in 2022. In 2023, Sony had dual hits with The Last of Us on HBO and Twisted Metal on Peacock. God of War is clearly a priority and one the studios hope to get right.
Fans of God of War have a glimmer of hope as Prime Video will give us a new Kratos story this holiday season. Secret Level is an anthology series that tells stories set in unique video game worlds, and the trailer for the series shows off Kratos, likely in the planned PlayStation-themed episode. This will have to tide fans over as the God of War series is likely not coming for at least another two years. By then, we might have a new God of War game to play.
