In a recent interview with Rick Beato, Alan Parsons spoke about what Roger Waters and David Gilmour’s relationship was like while he was working with them.
“They were all critical of each other’s performances and not afraid to say,” the musician recalled. “If David Gilmour had produced an incredible guitar solo on something, Roger might say, ‘I think that might be all right, David. Thank you.’ [Laughs] Pretty, sort of low-key ‘congratulations.’”
Parsons commented on the ongoing feud between the two rockers, “They all got on really well. Making ‘Dark Side’ was a joy. I mean, everybody was into what they were doing. Everybody was friendly. It’s terribly sad that the rift exists between them now.”
The producer worked with Pink Floyd on ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and even got a Grammy nomination for it. However, he turned down their offer to work on their next album, ‘Wish You Were Here,’ to focus on his solo career with the Alan Parsons Project.
“It was a very difficult decision to make because it was a generous offer by Pink Floyd, and obviously high profile because of the success of ‘The Dark Side of the Moon,’ but it turned out to be the right decision,” said Alan in a 2022 chat with John Beaudin of Rock History Music.
Still, his career went great after working with Pink Floyd as he recalled, “I started having hits almost immediately after having made the decision not to work with Pink Floyd. I had hits with Pilot, Steve Harley, Cockney Rebel, and John Miles. Two consecutive number ones in the UK.”
“I had a little bit of altercation with Roger Waters recently,” replied Alan when asked who in Pink Floyd he got along with the most. “He wasn’t happy about me playing in Tel Aviv in Israel because he’s got issues with politics in the Middle East.”
Parsons added, “David Gilmour was always supportive. He played on one of my solo albums, called ‘A Valid Part.’ So, he’s always been friendly. Nick showed up at a masterclass I was doing at Abbey Road probably two or three years ago. And he’s coming here to Santa Barbara, where I live, in a week or so.”
Parsons is currently performing in the United States. His next show is scheduled for August 14 in Denver, Colorado. Later, he will also play in Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson, and Milwaukee.
