Pain frontman Peter Tägtgren shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence and its use in the music industry.
In a new interview with Chaoszine, the singer explained how he used AI in projects such as his work with Lindemann. He said the way you use it could either be your death or a useful tool:
It’s free. Like I said, it’s a nice tool when you need it but it can also be your death, and you get lazy.”
Tägtgren also thinks that musicians who use AI for their music end up as cover bands instead of producing original music:
“I heard about people who write lyrics with AI and things and I’m like, ‘Don’t you want to do it yourself? Aren’t you an artist? Are you a f*cking copycat?’ If you do that you are kind of playing in a cover band instead.”
How Lindemann Used AI
Before dropping their second album, ‘F&M,’ Lindemann released their single ‘Ich weiß es nicht.’ The thing is, the music video was created entirely by AI.
According to the description on YouTube, the video was created using Generative Adversarial Networks. Those are AI setups capable of producing images:
“By analysing thousands of pictures GANs learn image features in a similar way to humans, generalizing visual patterns into conceptual understanding.”
The resulting black-and-white video starts with snails and butterflies, then takes a turn as the heavy industrial music kicks in. It features hundreds of faces morphing into each other that creates a hypnotic effect. Additionally, some parts of the video appear to be eerie deepfake scenes from horror movies involving the two members.
