Agatha All Along star Patti LuPone admits she still doesn’t know much about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming Disney+ series stars Kathryn Hahn, reprising her villainous role from WandaVision, which starred Elizabeth Olsen. Along with Hahn, Agatha All Along features a brand-new cast of characters, which includes LuPone making her MCU debut. However, even though the show could have major implications in the MCU, the genre as a whole does not concern LuPone one bit.
The Broadway legend joked with Variety during the ‘purple’ carpet premiere of the new Disney+ series. LuPone admitted she’s never seen the Avengers movies but did watch WandaVision a few times before filming Agatha All Along. She continued that even though she understood very little, she still wanted to be part of the MCU as a witch or a villain. Watch the clip below:
LuPone joins the cast of Agatha All Along as Lilia Calderu. While much of her character’s backstory remains a mystery, comic fans will know that Calderu is a 450-year-old witch. It’s not clear yet what history Lilia has with Agatha, but considering Agatha’s reputation, it’s likely more hostile than friendly.
Most of the ensemble cast has been trending online this week during the press run to promote the new series premiere. Just earlier in the week, the Tony award winner LuPone gushed about co-star and fellow Broadway alumni Joe Locke, saying how easily he fit in with all the women. Agatha All Along has a primarily female cast, and LuPone complimented the way Locke never separated himself. The wacky, powerhouse of a cast is certainly going to deliver one of the most unique entries into the Marvel television series catalog. In a Variety the cast discussed its LGBTQ+ representation, calling it the gayest MCU project yet. Plaza agreed, saying “”It better be, cause that’s what I signed up for.” During the premiere, Plaza teased the appearance of her character’s upcoming reveal. Check out the clip below:
As the hours tick closer to the premiere, more clips and images continue to circulate. So far we know that Agatha All Along will pay homage to several horror classics and feature a musical number ‘The Ballad of the Witches Road’. In a recently released behind the scenes’ special, the creators shared how almost every effect was done practically on set. And now with the premiere episodes just hours away, new scenes are being released. Watch a newly released clip below, posted by user “Scarlet Witch Updates”.
Speaking of the Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote her new film, His Three Daughters. Olsen and Kimmel speculated on her character’s potential to return to the MCU screen, despite her apparent death at the climax of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The actress expressed how much fun she had and begged for an open window for her character, Wanda Maximoff, to be un-dead. She added the caveat that she wants to find the smartest writers to do it in the cleverest way possible. In other words, something more than the casual multiverse pick’n’mix cameo that MCU fans are used to. For example, the hero appearances in this summer’s box office hit, Deadpool & Wolverine.
Now that LuPone appears in one of the MCU series, perhaps she’ll be enticed to be in other projects. As the first of the WandaVision spin off series to premiere, Agatha All Along marks a new era for Disney+ and Marvel. While some had little expectations of the series, Agatha is receiving praise as early reviews come in. A spin-off people did not necessarily ask for, Agatha All Along is the curious little show that could. Surviving the pandemic and Hollywood strikes is a triumph in itself. However, if the project turns out to be a hit, which Marvel could use, perhaps this project will draw in old and new Marvel fans.
Agatha All Along premieres Wednesday, September 18th 9:00 pm EST on Disney+.
