Jac Schaeffer, the executive producer of Marvel’s new Disney+ series, Agatha All Along, shared some insight into the final scene of Episode 4 between Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza). This week’s Episode 4 saw the return of Plaza’s charismatic Rio Vidal, the green witch with a black heart. In the series premiere, viewers were first introduced to the character in a surprise confrontation between Agatha and Rio.
Reacting to the reverse enemies to lovers set up, fans went crazy over their palpable chemistry and visceral tension between Agatha and Rio. It was evident that the two witches had an intense and intimate relationship which then soured. Since Episode 1, fans have speculated about what could have caused the rift. Episode 4 finally gave viewers some clue as to what came between the two.
After Mrs. Hart/Sharon’s death, the coven makes the daring decision to summon a replacement green witch. Rio Vidal claws her way out of the earth to the horror of the coven. Rio’s appearance sparks rage in Agatha and curiosity in the rest of the coven. Later on in the episode, Rio shares a key moment from her past, noting how she is carrying a “scar,” from a person she was forced to hurt while “doing her job.” In the aftermath of the scene, Rio and Agatha are caught up in a moment and almost kiss until Rio stops it happening.
In the final moments of the episode, Rio tells Agatha, “That boy isn’t yours.” This is a reference to the identity of Teen, but there is still plenty of ambiguity about whether Rio is telling Agatha the truth. That is something Schaeffer intended, as she explained to TVLine,
“It’s not meant to be entirely clear. That moment, which is so loaded and so powerful — our intention for that moment is really about Rio’s relationship with Agatha. They’re on the precipice of reconnecting, but this idea of ‘the boy’ is something that comes between them.”
A Witch’s Brew of Mysteries & Secrets
Each new episode of Agatha All Along reveals new puzzle pieces of the coven’s backstories while building on the intrigue of overarching mysteries of the series. This week’s episode thoroughly explored Alice’s past and her generational curse while Rio shared a new clue about her history with Agatha and Teen’s identity.
When it comes to the identity of Teen, if he is not Agatha’s son, then who is he? It was revealed in Episode 3 that none of the other witches in the coven are able to hear his identity due to the magic sigil placed on him. However, the show has yet to reveal who placed that on him. Mephisto was name-dropped in the third episode, and it remains to be seen if he will appear in the series. There is also still the possibility of Wanda Maximoff being behind it.
While this is one of the main focus points for many viewers, there are still many other members of Agatha’s coven waiting for their moment in the spotlight. With several more episodes still to come, it won’t be too much longer before we discover the whole truth about what has proved to be a hugely popular addition to the MCU.
