Agatha All Along seems to have been a big hit for Disney+ as it topped Disney+’s streaming charts, even momentarily knocking the beloved animated kids’ series Bluey off the top spot. Agatha All Along is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a spin-off of the popular WandaVision, spotlighting Kathryn Hahn’s breakout character Agatha Harkness. The first two episodes on Disney+ premiered on September 18, 2024, with a new episode set for every week until October 30, 2024, which will be a two-part finale in time for Halloween.
Agatha All Along topped the Disney+ global streaming charts, taking the number 1 spot from the pre-school-aimed Australian animated series Bluey, which has since become a worldwide phenomenon and has almost had a near-permanent hold on the top of the Disney+ charts. Additional information from Variety reveals that the first episode of Agatha All Along generated 9.3 million views on Disney+ in its first seven days of streaming. However, it is unclear if “first episode” incorporates the whole two-episode premiere or just the actual first episode.
Agatha All Along Compared to Other Series
Agatha All Along’s 9.3 million views are interesting when leveled against other streaming series. While one would say that it easily topped The Penguin‘s 5.3 million viewers across HBO, Max, and other platforms, those were for its first four days, so it is unclear how much ground The Penguin covered in those three extra days. Interestingly, Agatha All Along and The Penguin came in behind The Acolyte, with the Star Wars series drawing in 11.1 million viewers in five days when it premiered in June 2024. While some might point to it as a bad sign for Agatha All Along, given that Disney and Lucasfilm did not renew The Acolyte, Agatha All Along is seemingly intended as a miniseries.
Bluey has already reclaimed the top spot back from Agatha All Along, but the series breaking out so quickly shows how well Disney and Marvel marketed the series. While some fans might have claimed nobody “asked for this series” because Agatha Harkness isn’t that popular among comic book fans, Marvel Studios recognized they had something special with Kathryn Hahn’s version of the character and that audiences clearly liked her, so they did give her a classic spin-off.
They also looked to expand their target audience. Timing it perfectly for the Halloween season, being a weekly event families can watch in September and October to build excitement was a good call by Disney. Much like WandaVision, fan theories for Agatha All Along will certainly increase and likely draw in more viewers over the coming weeks, and as Halloween fast approaches, more audiences might also be waiting to binge it closer to the holiday.
