Adam Lambert is slamming homophobes with confidence and feels sorry for them.
In a new interview with USA Today, the singer talked about the song he re-released 15 years after its first release. He thinks after years of struggling in the industry, he finally earned to sing about it:
“This many years later, I feel like I’ve earned the right to sing about whatever the heck I want. I feel like I’ve earned the right to make music for people like me and people that understand people like me. And I’m not really concerned with anybody that doesn’t like it.”
He added that people are scared of the confidence of the LGBTQ+ community:
“I think people are scared of confidence and scared of pride and scared of what they don’t understand. I feel sorry for those that are controlled by that kind of fear.”
Lambert Changed The Lyrics To Make It LGBTQ+ Friendly
The singer has re-recorded ‘Whataya Want From Me’ from his debut album, ‘For Your Entertainment,’ and changed some of the lyrics.
When he first dropped the song, he was facing pressure from the industry. In a TikTok video, he explained why he felt the urge to change ‘it’ to ‘he’ in the lyrics. According to him, it’s because some people didn’t want ‘the gay guy to succeed’:
“There weren’t a lot of gay people, and contemporary pop music at the time, and when it came to recording the song they were like, ‘You know what? We should change ‘he’ to ‘it,’ so that we don’t give anybody who’s homophobic or fearful any reason to not give this song a chance.’”
He also explained the change he made in the song now that it’s more different today:
“15 years since that music history has changed so much, there’s been so much progress; a lot of queer people in the music now. I got to do this remix and I called up DJ White Shadow, who is amazing, and he was totally on to do it. So I went to the studio and as I was singing the chorus I went, ‘You know what? It’s 2024, times have changed. I think I should change the lyric back to ‘he.’ I think that’d be really cool.’”
In other news, Adam Lambert is dropping his first collection of original work since 2020. It’s an EP titled ‘Afters,’ set to be released on July 19th.
