Ace Frehley shared his views on why Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons might have downplayed his contributions to KISS in a recent chat on ‘Guitar Tales.’
“There was always a jealousy there,” he noted. “The fact that my solo album, with ‘New York Groove,’ was the most successful out of the four. I used to get the hottest girls. I didn’t go after movie stars, though, ‘cause that just complicates things.”
The guitarist explained the difference between his and Simmons’ approach to dating, “‘Cause you’re a celebrity, you’ve got another celebrity there and it’s twice as complicated. So, I don’t understand why Gene went out with Cher and Diana Ross. It just became harder, if you wanna go do anything. But Gene doesn’t party. So, he’s pretty much in the hotel. And he doesn’t like going out on vacations, he told me. He hasn’t been on a vacation in 15-plus years. But everybody’s different.”
Gene Simmons had live-in relationships with both Cher and Diana Ross in the 1980s. He reportedly developed feelings for Ross while still with Cher.
The singer admitted later in life to having been with thousands of women and keeping a Polaroid of each one. His wife, actress Shannon Lee Tweed, destroyed these photos on their reality show, ‘Gene Simmons Family Jewels.’
Meanwhile, Ace Frehley’s engagement of six years with Lara Cove ended. He announced the split during a June concert in West Virginia by noting that they were both ‘happy’ as it ‘was just time.’
The guitarist is still on the road to support his latest album, ‘10,000 Volts.’ He will perform next at the Northwest Washington fair in Lynden, Washington, on August 16.
