Jai Courtney is hoping his deceased The Suicide Squad character, Captain Boomerang, can make a comeback in James Gunn’s new DCU. Courtney first played Captain Boomerang in David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad, alongside Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. The trio stood out in an otherwise underwhelming movie. As a result, fans were excited to see Courtney join the cast of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, (a soft reboot of Ayer’s movie). However, unlike the first film, Captain Boomerang was used to enforce The Suicide Squad‘s title. Boomerang meets a bloody end at the beginning of Gunn’s movie, ruling out his DCEU future. But with Gunn and Peter Safran rebooting the DC Universe, Captain Boomerang’s fate might not be so certain.
Speaking to ComicBook, while promoting his newest movie, Catching Dust, Jai Courtney said that he would love to reprise the role under the new banner of the DC Universe. The Australian actor was also asked whether he would potentially want to play a new character in the comics-based universe, to which he replied it’s, “Boomerang or bust.” Courtney doesn’t know how Gunn could incorporate Captain Boomerang in a future project, but hopes that Boomerang could get an origin story project at some point. He said:
“Boomerang was so much fun to play. I would love to see him come back in some capacity. It’s impossible to fathom now that would be on the DC hit list. But hey, I don’t know. I have always had this dream of trying to find some way to do an origin story with him. I know he is not like a fan favorite from that canon, but he was just such a fun character to play, and I just think doing something in that space with such irreverence and just that jovial sort of sensibility would just be a hoot.”
Captain Boomerang Could Work in the New DC Universe
It was surprising to see Captain Boomerang in the line-up of David Ayer’s original Suicide Squad movie. The character is modestly known among The Flash fans, but rarely breaches the wider DC Comics universe. To regular moviegoers, he was a veritable unknown. Now that he’s been introduced to general audiences (twice), there is a chance that Captain Boomerang could appear again in the new DC Universe.
Of all the upcoming DCU projects — which have been labeled under the “Gods & Monsters” phase — it makes the most sense for Captain Boomerang to appear in Waller. Starring Viola Davis, Waller sees the actress reprise her role as the stone-cold, morally grey leader of Task Force X (a.k.a. the Suicide Squad). Amanda Waller also runs a supernatural monster squad in the Creature Commandos, an upcoming animated series that officially kicks off the DCU. However, considering Captain Boomerang’s powers revolve around, well… boomerangs, it’s unlikely he’ll appear in a team of witches, ghouls, and demons. Little has been announced about the Waller series, but some familiar characters from past Suicide Squad movies could likely make brief appearances in the show.
