Prime Video has released a new trailer for the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Taking place thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings in the Second Age of Middle-earth, Season 2 of the prequel series will continue the story of Galadriel and her quest to destroy Sauron. The trailer shows the return of Sauron (Charlie Vickers) as he works to conquer Middle-earth.
Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.
As war rages across the realms of elves, dwarves, and men, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) races to defeat Sauron before he becomes too powerful to stop. The Season 1 finale saw the Rings of Power forged and shared among her allies. However, in the wrong hands, the rings can be a terrible power.
How Powerful Is Sauron?
Having cast aside his false identity of Halbrand, Sauron the Dark Lord has fully emerged. Sauron is seemingly armed with ancient magic, orcs, and the forces of evil at his command. The trailer shows glimpses of old and new dangers like the fiery monster, the Balrog, zombies, and spiders. Armies of orcs attack the kingdoms and gain territory for Sauron. Amazon MGM Studios teases:
“This season features the long-awaited Siege of Eregion, a definitive battle in J.R.R. Tolkien’s history of the Second Age of Middle-earth, from which not everyone makes it out alive.
Unlikely alliances are forged amidst fire, and true friendships are tested.”
The stakes are also higher this season as the Rings of Power enter the fray. Sauron is a formidable foe and the extent of his power has yet to be seen. The trailer shows him scheming to expand his sight and influence over Middle-earth. The effect of the rings on different characters, influencing their decisions and relationships, will also be explored this season.
The trailer hints at the possibility of Galadriel and Adar joining forces against Sauron. New actor Sam Hazeldine will star as Adar, leader of the orcs, in Season 2. Gil-galad and Elrond prepare their elvish forces, unsure if they can prevail against the enemy. At one point in the trailer, we see an image of Galadriel chained in a cage surrounded by orcs. How will Galadriel get out of this perilous position? Meanwhile, Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) grapples with the impending reality of war and his contribution to the fate of Middle-earth after successfully forging the Rings of Power in the previous season. As he reckons with the consequences of his actions, Sauron’s presence looms, seemingly concealing his true identity and intentions.
We get short glimpses of Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) in the thick of battle and the harfoot, Nori (Markella Kavenagh). The Season 1 finale showed Nori and the Stranger beginning their journey to find answers to his origins. Their stories will continue and hopefully uncover how the Stranger’s destiny will impact Middle-earth. In the final clip, Galadriel and Sauron face off in battle. Amazon is dropping the first three episodes of Season 2 on August 29 with weekly episode releases after.
