In a new interview with Guitar World, Mercyful Fate’s Becky Baldwin talked about how Lars Ulrich once said he was a fan of them.
The bassist recalled the time Metallica performed in Denmark:
“I was just in Denmark. Metallica were playing in Copenhagen, and some of the band members are based over there. So I flew over to meet them. We went to see Metallica and we got to meet Lars [Ulrich] at the end because he’s a big Mercyful Fate fan.”
She shared the interaction between her and Ulrich:
“So he was happy to have us there at the show, and this was a real full-circle moment. I was like, ‘Oh my god, you’re in my favorite band ever.’ And he’s like, ‘You’re in my favorite band.’”
Baldwin Joined Mercyful Fate In January
Mercyful Fate announced on Instagram in January that Baldwin was their new bass player, replacing Joey Vera. Later, in February, Becky talked to That Metal Interview about joining Mercyful Fate as a permanent member:
“It’s great. It’s just really nice to feel settled into the position now. I did those couple of runs of shows back in 2022, and, of course, it was great to do those, but always being able to see the end in sight and knowing that the next show is probably going to be Joey coming back in to do the live shows. And so now I just feel — I don’t know — like a sigh of relief almost that I know that I did a good job doing that first tour and that I feel welcomed and just that my role is stable.”
She added:
“I guess before I just wanted to do a good job and make a good impression. And not because I wanted the job permanently — of course, I wanted it, but I never thought that that would be an option. But just to know that such a band that I have so much respect for that I would do a good job, and to know that I did that, because they want me back. It’s just very reassuring.”
In the same interview, Baldwin also revealed that the new Mercyful Fate album won’t come out until 2025 because King Diamond was focusing on his band’s next album, ‘The Institute.’
