The next chapter in The Batman saga, The Penguin, arrived at San Diego Comic-Con armed with a blistering new trailer, and a few little teasers of what fans can expect from the dark and twisted world being unwrapped by Matt Reeves. Despite the dark setting of the universe of The Batman, Reeves noted during the panel that there are still moments of comedy to be found thanks to Colin Farrell, who ensured that this version of Penguin is his own. The actor, appearing by videolink, mentioned that he purposely avoided watching the TV series Gotham, so he would not end up taking ideas from the show’s version of the character, played by Robin Lord Taylor.
During the panel, Reeves also confirmed that the events of The Penguin will directly lead into The Batman Part II, and Farrell will be once again reprising his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobb in the sequel.
Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell reprises the role of Oz Cobb in The Penguin, which will act as a spinoff sequel to director Matt Reeves’ critically acclaimed 2022 DC outing, The Batman. Picking up just one week after the events of the Robert Pattinson-led movie, The Penguin will explore the DC supervillain’s rise to power as he goes from lowly crook to criminal overlord in Gotham City.
Alongside Farrell in the lead role, The Penguin has amassed a stellar cast that includes Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine Falcone; Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, a fellow mob boss and gangster; Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, the son of Carmine Falcone; and Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Cobblepot’s driver. The rest of the cast includes Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, David H. Holmes, and Mark Strong.
The Penguin Is Due to Debut on HBO in September
It was recently revealed that The Penguin will be the “bridge” between 2022’s The Batman and the upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II. Lead writer and showrunner Lauren LeFranc confirmed that the series will be set just one week after the first movie and teased the importance of the series to director Matt Reeves’ Bat-Verse.
“We are the bridge between the two films. We’re going almost directly into the second film Matt has planned.”
