James Gunn’s first entry in his new DCU has finally given fans an idea of what they can expect with the trailer for Creature Commandos. The animated series will be the first entry in the revamped comic book franchise, and comes with some high expectations given its ensemble voice cast and prominent place in the new DC timeline. The trailer’s release also revealed that the series will arrive on Max in December.
The DCU will really kick off with Superman in 2025, but before that, Creature Commandos is arriving as a mature pallet cleanser for those still pining for the likes of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel and Ben Affleck’s Batman. Gunn has already made it clear that despite being an animated project, Creature Commandos is not family friendly, and is coming to set the tone for what is coming to the DC franchise. Check out the trailer below.
Back in May, a short synopsis was released just ahead of the Annecy Film Festival, which revealed that the series will “follow Amanda Waller as she forms a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners.” For many, this may sound very similar to another familiar group of DC misfits, the Suicide Squad, and in fact there are many similarities between the two – and not just the involvement of Waller. However, this team features an almost completely new set of characters to the on-screen world of DC Comics.
Creature Commandos Features in an All-Star Cast
As you would expect, James Gunn is no stranger to putting together a strong cast of well-known stars, as well as throwing in a few of his favorite actors to work with. Frank Grillo lends his voice to Rick Flag Sr., while Viola Davis once again reprises her role as the ever-present Amanda Waller. Gunn’s brother and frequent collaborator Sean Gunn voices both G.I. Robot and Weasel, David Harbour is Eric Frankenstein, and Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic. The impressive cast is rounded out by Indira Varma, Zoe Chao, Alan Tudyk, Anya Chalotra, and Steve Agee, who play the Bride of Frankenstein, Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Circe, and John Economos, respectively.
While providing a voice to a character in a franchise like the DCU would usually not necessarily lead to the same actor playing that role in a live-action iteration of their character. However, Gunn has made it clear that any characters who appear in both animation and live-action projects will be played by the same actors in both iterations.

While it is unclear as yet how Creature Commandos will fit within the DCU, especially given its more mature approach, unlike the MCU’s continuity, it doesn’t look like James Gunn is planning on making every project intricately connected to the next, and has a much more relaxed kind of thread running through the first chapter of the new franchise. With another five months until Creature Commandos’ arrival, there is plenty of time for Gunn to tease more about the series via his social media accounts.
