Gojira will play at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
The group will be the first metal band to play at an Olympic opening ceremony. It’s a big moment for Gojira and extreme music, as the opening ceremony is one of the world’s biggest events. Around 300,000 people will attend, with millions watching live.
Who Will Join Gojira On Stage?
Le Parisien said Gojira will team up with opera singer Marina Viotti at the event. Sortir À Paris reported the band’s inclusion at the ceremony with this headline:
“Who is Gojira, the metal band tipped for the opening ceremony?”
The site went on to say:
“[The rumored collaboration with Marina is] a wonderful artistic proposition, and one that will surprise many if it is confirmed!”
The other performers in the ceremony are Céline Dion, Lady Gaga, and Aya Nakamura. Time Out also reported:
“The opening ceremony is orchestrated by renowned stage director Thomas Jolly, who has invited a stellar cast of local and international stars to celebrate the rich history and diversity of French musical culture.”
Earlier Rock Artists In The Olympics
Few rock acts have performed at the Olympics before, and none were metal or extreme music. Past rock performers include KISS, Jimmy Page, Alanis Morisette, Snow Patrol, The Who, Paul McCartney, Queen, and Muse.
The Paris Olympics opening ceremony starts on July 26, at 7:30 PM Paris time (1:30 PM EST). For the first time, it will be held along the Seine River, not in a stadium.
Gojira previously got Grammy nominations for their albums ‘Magma’ (2016) and ‘Fortitude’ (2021), and they’ve toured with Metallica and Slipknot. They’re also scheduled to perform with Korn this fall. The tour starts on September 12 in Tampa at Midflorida Credit Union Amphitheatre and ends on October 27 in St. Paul, MN at Xcel Energy Center.
