For over a year now, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans have been desperately seeking an update on the status of The Always Sunny Podcast. And, for over a year, they haven’t heard a word from the podcast’s trio: Dennis Reynolds’ Glenn Howerton, Ronald ‘Mac’ McDonald’s Rob McElhenney, and Charlie Kelly’s Charlie Day. Well, that’s all changed, and sadly it’s bad news. The podcast followed the three (of five main cast members) as they went through the series episode by episode. Their recollections were charming and, unsurprisingly, often hilarious. But, it seems they’re not even going to reach the series’ HD era, which began with Season 6.
Sitting down with Rick Glassman on his Take Your Shoes Off podcast, Howerton elaborated on why there are no new Sunny sit-downs. And, according to Howerton, the answer is the one fans most likely already suspect: time constraints.
“We got rid of the podcast studio. It just became logistically difficult to get the three of us in a room together and we didn’t want to do it on Zoom. We set it aside for a minute, and then a minute became months.”
What Are the Always Sunny Gang Doing Now?
After wrapping up A.P. Bio, Glenn Howerton had a co-lead role in the excellent BlackBerry which, while curiously passed over at the Academy Awards, has surely opened doors for him in dramatic projects down the line. He also plays Fred in Max’s Velma, which has been met with a — to put it kindly — divisive response. Charlie Day, meanwhile, has a film career that’s only gained more clout with the blockbuster success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with four more movie projects already lined up (five, including the inevitable Super Mario Bros. sequel).

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Star Rejects Jerry Seinfeld’s ‘PC’ Sitcom Criticism
Rob McElhenney has responded to Jerry Seinfeld’s recent declaration that “the extreme left” is killing comedy.
But Rob McElhenney is the one whose schedule is by far the most difficult to work around. For one, there’s still a fourth season of Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest (which Day and fellow Sunny star David Hornsby executive produce) on the way. Then there’s the fact he co-owns Wrexham A.F.C. football club with Ryan Reynolds and, to top it all off, executive produces and stars in the hit documentary series about that co-ownership, Welcome to Wrexham.
But, while we may miss The Always Sunny Podcast, there are plenty of other really solid comedic podcasts out there for fans to enjoy, including How Did This Get Made?, SmartLess, WTF with Marc Maron, Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcast, the relatively new Tosh Show, and Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. Oh, and more Welcome to Wrexham is on the way on FX, while more It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is on the way on FXX.
