In an exclusive interview with People Magazine, returning star Auli’i Cravalho, who is known for having voiced the beloved animated character of Moana, has revealed that her character’s journey in Moana 2 is “completely different.” As viewers get transported back to the enchanting world of Polynesian mythology, the star promises that the movie will offer a fresh and captivating take on the Disney princess.
Cravalho also expressed her gratitude for returning to the recording booth as the titular character, whom she has grown to know quite intimately. But, as it turns out, this time, Moana isn’t some young, naive, wide-eyed princess hurling onto an adventure without giving it a second thought. She’s evolving into a brave and mature woman who is willing to embrace new challenges. Check out what Cravalho had to say about Moana’s transformation:
“She’s growing. She is pushing herself now even further beyond the reef… The recording booth is truly my happy place, and [I’m grateful to] come back to this character that I know so well, but also take her on a completely different journey.”

It’s been eight years since the original movie graced the silver screen, and along with her animated counterpart, Cravalho has seen immense growth herself. As for Moana 2, Disney has given a succinct yet intriguing synopsis that says Moana will “journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters,” where the stakes will be higher and the mysteries deeper, especially with her “wayfinding ancestors” involved.
Auli’i Cravalho’s Personal Growth From Moana to Mean Girls
Looking at Cravalho’s journey from the original film to the sequel, it’s obvious the path was not an easy one. When the continuing story of the daughter of a village chief was first in development, Moana went through numerous iterations. It was confirmed peviously that Disney+ would be making a television series based on the character, but then the project evolved into a surprise cinematic adventure. Cravalho, too, admitted she “had no idea” that Moana would get a sequel. But she’s excited to be a part of a gang that includes Frozen II and Inside Out 2. She told People,
“I think we’re in the era of really good sequels, and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

A delightful twist, however, is that Auli’i Cravalho isn’t just Moana anymore. She recently portrayed a fun character in Mean Girls and the role has generated its own fan following. The star candidly spoke about being approached by admirers who look at her and squeal in excitement. “I was expecting a little more anonymity, because I have a deliciously boyish haircut right now. Wrong. I walk into Walmart and they’re like, ‘Hey, really love you in that musical.’ I go, ‘Oh my God.’”
It’s really just a testament to Cravalho’s versatility and the influence she has on people. Navigating the treacherous waters of Oceania with Moana is her steadfast demigod companion, Maui, who, once again, will be voiced by Dwayne Johnson.
