The highly anticipated comedy sequel Happy Gilmore 2 has now found a director in What We Do in the Shadows and Workaholics’ Kyle Newacheck. Now that someone has been found to man the helm of the Adam Sandler follow-up, production is ready to begin, with What’s on Netflix revealing that Happy Gilmore 2 will go before cameras later this year on September 5, before wrapping on November 18. Which should offer some clues as to when we will be sitting down to stream the sequel on Netflix…
Happy Gilmore 2 will not be the first time that Kyle Newacheck has helmed a Netflix project. As well as directing episodes of hit sitcoms What We Do in the Shadows, Workaholics, Community, and Parks and Recreation, Newacheck directed and produced Game Over Man! for the streamer back in 2018, as well as the first Murder Mystery movie starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Clearly, both Sandler and Netflix liked what they saw, and have faith that Newacheck can craft something that lives up to the legacy of the first Happy Gilmore.
Netflix officially ordered a sequel to the beloved Adam Sandler sports comedy Happy Gilmore earlier this year, with the follow-up coming almost 30 years after the first one debuted. Sandler will return as the titular character, a failed hockey player with anger issues who turns to golf, with the actor and comedian reuniting with the first movie’s co-writer Tim Herlihy to pen the script.
What Do We Know About Happy Gilmore 2?
Released way back in 1996, the first Happy Gilmore stars Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and the late, great Carl Weathers, and follows an unsuccessful ice hockey player with a red-hot temper, Happy, who discovers a newfound talent for golf. While the first movie was met with a mixed response upon release, it has since garnered a cult following, with many no doubt wondering how the Netflix sequel will ever live up to its predecessor.
Plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 have yet to be revealed, but Sandler has addressed the idea of a sequel before, revealing back in 2022 that any potential follow-up would make the decades-long gap between movies a part of the story.
“Wouldn’t that be fun to do the senior tour of Happy Gilmore, and hang out with all those guys and try to write a great script about Happy as an older guy, and having to calm down his temper and all that stuff? But, I never know. Maybe one day, something like that.”

5 Ways Happy Gilmore Still Holds Up (And 4 Ways it Doesn’t)
Happy Gilmore is a classic Adam Sandler comedy film that once seemed timeless. However, things have changed so much that not all of it still holds up.
While Sandler has been confirmed to return, it has not yet been revealed whether original cast members Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen will join him. However, considering that the former has been very vocal on social media about once again doing battle with Sandler, while the latter reunited with Sandler for 2018’s Hubie Halloween, there is hope that they too will be brought back for the sequel. Sadly, several beloved members of the Happy Gilmore cast have since passed away, including The Price is Right host Bob Barker, Carl Weathers, and Joe Flaherty. Sandler, though, has promised that Happy Gilmore 2 will pay tribute to all of them, with the actor saying, “somehow they’ll be involved.”
