Comedian and What We Do in the Shadows star Jemaine Clement has revealed some hugely exciting news regarding the upcoming serial remake of the cult hit Time Bandits, confirming that work has already begun on season 2. Clearly, Clement and his fellow creators Iain Morris and Taika Waititi are confident in what they have created, with the first season not due to debut until later this month. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Clement revealed that they are “actually writing” a second season as we speak. However, he does also acknowledge the cutthroat world of television, admitting that Time Bandits season 2 is far from a certainty, and it all depends on whether people tune into the first outing when it lands on Apple TV+ next week.
“We are actually writing a second season, but it depends on if people watch the first season. If no one watches it, we throw it away in a bin. But I cannot tell you because I don’t want to spoil the second season.”
Well, here’s hoping they do, as thanks to his work on the likes of What We Do in the Shadows and Flight of the Conchords has proved Clement to be one of the funniest talents on TV. And no doubt fans cannot wait to see what he and Academy Award winner Taika Waititi do with Time Bandits.
Created by Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris, and Taika Waititi, Time Bandits is based on the 1981 movie of the same name by director Terry Gilliam, and promises to bring the fantasy adventure to a whole new audience. You can check out the official synopsis for the reboot below.
“Eleven-year-old Kevin’s passion for history is put to the test when he joins a ragtag group of time-traveling thieves on a high-stakes and an adventure.”
Time Bandits Land on Apple TV+ on July 24
Released way back in the before times of 1981, the new take on the Time Bandits is expected to follow a similar path as the beloved original, which finds an 11-year-old boy jumping through time in search of treasure to steal. The movie is now a cult classic, and is considered a childhood favorite by many, meaning that Clement and Waititi will have no easy task reinventing the tale for modern audiences.
