Divorce in the Black
follows Perry’s usual themes of a damsel in distress and slow pacing, with many calling the script a “first draft,” but is available to stream on Prime Video.
Tyler Perry’s run of badly received Netflix movies has been mirrored by his new Prime Video drama, Divorce in the Black, which has scored a catastrophic 0% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. Following on from his last effort, the equally derided Mea Culpa, Perry’s ability to consistently please audiences and critics is proving to be elusive, even if he is more than capable of delivering high viewing figures.
Divorce in the Black was released on July 11, with Perry taking on the roles of director, producer and writer. While this should ensure a strong vision for the movie, it has perhaps led once again to the same result as many of Perry’s divisive releases in not connecting with critics, or the majority of audiences. The negative reviews from critics have not just been the majority, but a unanimous agreement.

Tyler Perry has a lot more planned for Netflix…if only he could figure out exactly what those plans are.
While the movie has so far only generated 10 critical reviews, every single one is a scathing annihilation of the movie. From The Guardian’s bold statement that the film is Perry’s “worst film to date,” to ScreenRant’s note that the “tonal shifts that make the audience question the story’s purpose,” and capped off by Ready Stead Cut’s Jonathon Wilson delivering this gem of a takedown:
“One of the most enduring mysteries in the entertainment industry is Tyler Perry, whose adamancy in proudly putting his name in the title of execrable garbage like Divorce in the Black is utterly mystifying.”
Audience Reviews Have Been a Little Kinder to Tyler Perry
From a critical standpoint, Divorce in the Black has continued a long trend when it comes to the work of Tyler Perry. While the one-stop-shop of director/producer/writer and sometimes actor has continued to deliver consistency in his movies, the result has been consistently negative. Out of Perry’s 45 movie releases, only two have ever managed to achieve a “Certified Fresh” status on Rotten Tomatoes.
While many movies with low critical scores have turned out to be darlings of audiences, especially when it comes to streaming releases, in the case of Divorce in the Black, there has been something of an agreement between the two. Audiences have not been quite as unanimous in their condemnation of Perry’s latest offering, but have certainly not been overwhelmingly complimentary even in many of the “fresh” reviews.
