Sammy Hagar recently explained why he and his band won’t stop playing David Lee Roth-era songs.
The rocker took to Instagram to share a video from one of their recent gigs. While the video got so many heartfelt comments, one commenter complained that the band should play fewer DLR-era songs. The user wrote:
“Play more Chickenfoot and less DLR era stuff.”
Apparently, playing more Chickenfoot songs would ‘work’ for Hagar but there was one reason the band was playing more Van Halen songs. The singer responded:
“Ha ha that would work for me just as well but we’re trying to respect Van Halen as a whole. Gotta keep that music alive. thank you for this comment.”
Alex And Eddie Were Sick Of Playing DLR-Era Songs
In a chat with Ultimate Classic Rock, Hagar shared that bandmates Alex Van Halen and the late Eddie Van Halen were tired of playing songs from the David Lee Roth era.
After explaining that his first intention to join the band was to ‘make a statement,’ he later revealed why both he and his bandmates were sick of performing the former frontman’s songs:
“This was a unanimous decision from Ed, Al, Mike—nobody wanted to keep playing the old stuff. Everyone was like, ‘Man, we’re tired of that. Let’s play the new songs.’ But things have changed a lot now. I’m not trying to prove anything; I’m just playing for the fans. This tour is a thank-you to all the fans who’ve followed us over the years and waited a long time for this reunion—especially from my era.”
