Mike Portnoy felt the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins’ energy during his time in Dave Grohl’s studio.
The musician shared some photos from the studio with Manuel Giusti and AxiA and wrote in the caption of his post:
“What an amazing couple of days in LA…hangin and recording with AxiA & Manuel Giusti for their new project Last Second Chance (for those of you with great taste in comedy, you would also know them as Tim Heidecker’s Dekkar from On Cinema at the Cinema. As if working with these guys wasn’t cool enough, I got to record at Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 which was insane!!”
Portnoy detailed his experience in the Foo Fighters studio:
“What an amazing experience…truly one of the coolest studios I’ve ever recorded in…Totally felt Taylor’s vibes! And yes…I’ll now have a recording in my discography that was recorded on *THAT* Sound City desk that recorded sooooo many legendary albums! (and I used one of Dave’s snare drums on the whole session too) Good times! Will share more info on the release when I get it….”
New Dream Theater Album Is On The Way
The drummer is also busy with Dream Theater’s new album nowadays. Portnoy already completed recording drum parts for the record about two months ago but it isn’t known yet when the album will arrive. Mike recently spoke with The Prog Report and shared updates with fans about the delays in its release:
“But Dream Theater is still old school where the band is in the studio the whole time. And it’s not like anybody’s doing anything at home separately. We do it all together, coming in one at a time to work and record. So, yeah, it’s a longer process than I’ve had in quite some time. But it’s great… It’s the old way. It’s the way I always made records with Dream Theater. I just hadn’t done it that way in so long, but it is good. And the process is really detailed this way.”
Portnoy also explained that each member contributes at different stages, like working on vocal melodies together, which contrasts with other projects where members work independently. Portnoy expressed nostalgia for this method, as it’s been a while since he’s made an album this way.
