In a recent Instagram post, Lars Ulrich honored his late father Torben Ulrich.
The Metallica drummer shared a portrait of him and his father and wrote in the caption:
“So honored that this unique portrait of me and my dad (aka Heavy Metal Gandalf) is part of my friend Marc Hom’s insanely cool exhibition, ‘Re-Framed,’ at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY. It’s up now through September 2. Check it out if you’re in the area. MARC HOM. RE-FRAMED. Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, NY. 25 May – 02 September 2024.”
Torben Ulrich Died Last Year
In December 2023, Ulrich announced the death of his father on Instagram. He wrote:
“Torben Ulrich: 1928-2023. 95 years of adventures, unique experiences, curiosity, pushing boundaries, challenging the status quo, tennis, music, art, writing…. and quite a bit of Danish contrarian attitude. Thank you endlessly! I love you, Dad.”
At the time, many musicians like Sebastian Bach, Alex Skolnick, and Matt Sorum shared their condolences for Lars. Later, the musician posted a black-and-white photo of Torben and reflected on his feelings, writing:
“Since my dad’s passing 10 days ago, there has been an unexpected influx of condolences, messages, stories, and testimonies coming my way about how his life impacted and affected so many people in a variety of different ways; it’s honestly blown me away.”
Lars added:
“As you can imagine, it’s been quite a surreal time, so let me say from the heart how much I truly appreciate every single thought, sentiment, feeling, and emotion you’ve kindly taken the time to share with me. It means so, so, so much… Thank you, thank you, thank you…”
Torben Ulrich was born on October 4, 1928, in Denmark, and was a professional tennis player who won the Stuttgart Open in 1953. He competed in over 100 Davis Cup matches. He also had a passion for jazz, playing clarinet in a jazz band in the 1950s and later forming an improvised music group in 2005.
