In a new chat with Far Out Magazine, Nick Mason revealed his bass player Guy Pratt worked with David Gilmour on his upcoming solo album.
The drummer hasn’t heard Gilmour’s new album, ‘Luck and Strange,’ yet. But he has listened to the first song, ‘The Piper’s Call.’ He said:
“It’s all terrific, apart from the fact that he’s stolen my bass player. So [Saucerful of Secrets] have had to slightly reschedule when we’re working so that Guy [Pratt] can go and work with David.”
Pratt And Gilmour Worked Together In the Album
Pratt has been a part of Mason’s band, Saucerful of Secrets since 2018. He has also been working with Gilmour for almost two years for the guitarist’s new record. In January 2022, Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson shared a photo of the musician with Pratt from the studio and wrote in the caption:
“A good wit is hard to find.”
Later, Samson kept posting pictures of Gilmour and other artists working in the studio. These include pianist Roger Eno, drummer Adam Betts, bassist Tom Herbert, producer Charlie Andrew, and session musician Steve Gadd.
On April 24, Gilmour announced his fifth solo album, ‘Luck and Strange,’ which will be released on September 6. Samson wrote most of the lyrics, focusing on themes of mortality and aging. The album includes keyboards recorded by Richard Wright in 2007, lyrics from Gilmour’s son Charlie, and harp and vocals from his daughter Romany.
The First Track And Upcoming Tour Dates
The first single, ‘The Piper’s Call,’ was released on April 25. Gilmour announced the song with this message on X:
“It’s been such a joy to make my new album, ‘Luck and Strange,’ and I look forward to you hearing it. The first single, ‘The Piper’s Call,’ is out now.”
The rocker’s new solo album has nine songs. Eight are his own, and one is a cover of the Montgolfier Brothers’ ‘Between Two Points.’ After the album announcement, Gilmour will also go on a tour to promote it. In early May, the guitarist posted on his X account to announce new U.K. show dates. These will be his first live performances in eight years. David said in the post:
“London shows announced: Royal Albert Hall, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14 & 15 October. First access to tickets for UK/IE residents pre-ordering ‘Luck and Strange’ from the official David Gilmour UK Album Store at davidgilmour.com (including those who have already done so). General sale, Friday 10 May.”
Besides the UK, Gilmour will also perform at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on October 29 and 30, and at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 4 and 5. He will also have shows in Rome’s Circo Massimo in late September and early October.
