Matt Sorum talked about his memories with Jimmy Page in a recent chat with 107.7 The Bone and said he’s open to reunite Led Zeppelin with the guitarist. The drummer shared:
“I met him 20 – no, almost 25 years ago. Couldn’t have been cooler. Same last time. Even cooler now. This time I saw him, he just seemed so relaxed and so conf. Yeah, maybe internally you’re like, ‘I’m Jimmy Page. We’re Led Zeppelin.’ [But he’s not forward facing like that.]”
He continued:
“I feel like, kind of where I’m at in my life, I’m just like, ‘Okay, I’ve done a lot of cool stuff. Whatever comes after this is all icing on the cake.’ So, I go and play concerts with my friends, and if Jimmy calls, he wants to put Led Zeppelin back together, I’d probably do that. [Laughs]”
Sorum Says It’d Be Hard To Catch Led Zeppelin Sound Again
Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980 after drummer John Bonham’s death. Bonham’s son Jason has stepped in to play for the band’s occasional one-off shows since then.
Sorum mentioned talking to Page about Jason’s part in Zeppelin shows and explained:
“We did talk about Jason, and we talked about how the drummer instinct is so hard-driven and almost hereditary. ‘Cause I’d say there’s a million guys that think they can play Led Zeppelin, but it never sounds like Led Zeppelin perfectly. It’s not. Because that’s like human thing, and Jason is probably the closest I’ve heard to his father, and I believe that’s based on his heart and his lineage.”
No More Reunion Plans From The Band
Led Zeppelin’s last reunion took place at the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London in 2007. The event broke a record for the ‘Highest Demand for Tickets for One Music Concert’ at the time.
Still, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant shut off the possibility of another comeback. Page told MOJO five years after the show:
“We were enjoying it for all the right reasons. But there hasn’t been a whisper since then about doing anything and so I can’t really see that anything will happen. If it was going to happen, it would have happened by now.”
The two also refused to reunite at the studio to play ‘Stairway to Heaven’ for Dolly Parton’s ‘Rockstar’ album last year. But they appeared together in the 2021 documentary ‘Becoming Led Zeppelin.’
