Serena Williams continues to keep it real — and relatable — with her postpartum body image journey.
The 42-year-old Grand Slam champion recently opened up about her weight loss goals, one of which being fitting into a denim Valentino skirt. In an Instagram video shared on Wednesday, May 22, Williams tried on the skirt, which she first showed fans in January 2024.
“Back by popular demand,” the tennis star says in the clip. “I am going to try on my skirt again to see if it’s any closer than it was four weeks ago. Really it’s been about six weeks. Honestly, I feel like it’s gonna fit the same because I’ve been gym-ing a lot but I don’t know if the needle is moving.’”
“Can’t say I’m happy about this,” Williams comments as she tries to pull the maxi skirt over her hips, though she acknowledges that she’s made progress.
“It’s getting there,” she added. “Before it was like down here… it’s like an inch higher.”
Williams then jokes, “I wanna cry, but I’m not. I’m gonna stop eating all those snacks.”

Fans left an outpouring of support for Williams in the comments.
“I can only imagine the pressure for a public figure, let alone an athlete to get back into the figure you had,” one user wrote. “But our bodies look different after babies, let’s own it and show people we did battle for them and we’re proud.”
“Good job! It’s a marathon not a sprint,” said another. “You got this.”
The athlete first shared her goal of fitting into the skirt in a January 2024 Instagram post that she captioned, “The Diary of a Denim skirt (part 1).”
“I got this cool Valentino skirt when I was pregnant and I was like, ‘I’m gonna be able to fit in this when I don’t have a belly’” the tennis star says in the clip, before revealing: “I can’t fit it.”
Williams welcomed her second daughter, Adira River, in August 2023. She and husband Alexis Ohanian also share daughter Olympia, 6.

“This is my goal,” Williams continues in the video. “And honestly, I should have been able to fit it by now, but I ran into some… I got distracted for about a month. And so, I’m about a month behind. We have a ways to go.”
When she realizes she wasn’t going to be able to fit into the skirt, Williams laughs and jokes, “Houston we have a problem.”
“If I go to the gym and get fit I’ll be able to fit in in a month,” she adds.
Written over the video, Williams included the caption: “Back to the drawer… for now!”
