After leaving his mark on the MCU playing the legendary villain Crossbones opposite Chris Evans‘ Captain America, Frank Grillo is returning to another live-action comic book adaptation. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed on his personal Instagram that Grillo will play Rick Flag Sr. in Peacemaker Season 2, which recently began filming. It was already confirmed that Grillo would be portraying Rick Flag Sr. in the animated project Creature Commandos, but this will be his first DC role stepping out of the voice recording studio and in front of the camera.
When Gunn first announced the DCU’s Chapter 1 slate, titled Gods and Monsters, he said that certain actors would portray their characters in animation and live-action, and he’s living up to his word on that front. Gunn has also mentioned that Peacemaker Season 2 will be canon to the DCU, and Season 1 is not, but considering that John Cena’s Peacemaker killed Rick Flag Jr. in Gunn’s first DC outing, The Suicide Squad, this raises some questions about the potential timeline. While Peacemaker Season 1 was set after the events of The Suicide Squad, it appears Season 2 will turn back the clock, pitting Christopher Smith against his former enemy’s father.
What’s Happening With the DCU?
No official release date for Peacemaker Season 2 has been announced yet, and potential plot details are being kept under wraps, but fans can rest assured that Gunn will share details in due time when he sees fit. It’s important to remember that Gunn is also in the midst of directing the upcoming DCU feature film debut, Superman, where he recently revealed the first look at David Corenswet‘s Superman suit. Considering Superman is the hard launch for a new era of stories, and arguably the most significant DC film of the decade, it’s likely Gunn’s time will be prioritized there, which could lead to a slightly longer wait for Peacemaker Season 2.
While some characters from Peacemaker Season 1 didn’t make it through the finale, all surviving characters are expected to reprise their roles in Season 2, including Danielle Brooks as Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) daughter Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Agent Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Star Wars icon Dee Bradley Baker as the voice of Peacemaker’s lovable pet Eagly. Grillo is the first new addition to Peacemaker Season 2, but his casting opens up the door for other DCU stars —animated and otherwise — to potentially appear in the series.
All episodes of Peacemaker Season 1 are available to stream on Max. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates on the series.
