Nancy Wilson admitted feeling jealous of Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie.
The guitarist was recently a guest on the Broken Record podcast and said Fleetwood Mac was already famous when Heart was starting out. Heart was working hard to make an album and tour, while Fleetwood Mac’s music was everywhere on the radio. So, she and Ann Wilson thought their fame might make it harder for Heart to succeed:
“I felt so jealous of that band because there was two women in it that sounded so good together, and they had the acoustic guitar kind of thing that I felt like I was bringing a lot of into our band. They kind of had it already, you know, like something we were trying to capture. They had already captured it. So I was really like, ‘Damn it! What makes us so different now?’”
According to Nancy, her sister, Ann, made them different from Fleetwood Mac:
“We did sound very different. A lot of it’s Ann’s voice, you know, very signature. The muscle and the power that she possesses and the way she sings is completely its own thing. So lucky for us, we had Ann.”
Heart And Fleetwood Mac Hung Out In The Past
Ann and Nancy became friends with Stevie Nicks in the early 1980s. Nancy wrote about the Fleetwood Mac singer in the book ‘Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul, and Rock and Roll’:
“She came to one of our shows, and she and her girlfriend just sort of became part of our entourage, traveling with us. She brought along a stack of fashion magazines and her drawing books. We were partying hard that month, but Stevie, with her Courvoisier and blow, outdid us. When it came to drugs, though, we couldn’t keep up with Stevie. She had a system where she could do various substances, and then do other substances to help her sleep. We never knew how to do that, and, at some point, we had to leave to sleep.”
After the release of the book in 2012, the Wilson sisters revealed that Nicks wasn’t pleased with them. She didn’t like the part of the book that talked about her drug use. Heart is currently touring the US and will head to Europe in the summer. They’ll perform at London’s O2 Arena on July 1 and finish their tour in Las Vegas at the Fontainebleau on December 15.
