The last time Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx shared the screen, they were playing the villainous Miss Hannigan and tech billionaire-turned-adoptee Will Stacks in 2014’s Annie remake. That movie musical also happens to be the last time Diaz shared the screen with, well, anyone, as the Charlie’s Angels star went on a decade-long acting sabbatical following the movie’s release (the two events are presumably unrelated.) But now Diaz and Foxx are back back back in the very shrewdly titled Back In Action, which is not as it happens a remake of *that* Looney Tunes movie (sadly), but rather a buzzy, Netflix bound spy comedy from writer-director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) and co-scribe Brendan O’Brien (Bad Neighbours). Check out the action-packed trailer below:
“Tonight something clicked,” says Diaz’ Emily to husband Matt (Foxx) at the start of this new trailer, “for the first time in a really long time I felt alive again.” Well, torching wrong-uns with an improvised flamethrower and nutting a ne’er-do-well will do that to a couple! You see, in a fun set-up that gives the spy comedy genre a neat new wrinkle, Back In Action casts Foxx and Diaz as two seemingly normal, suburban parents who are hiding a big secret from their kids — that they were elite CIA agents in a past life. But as this first teaser for the flick — which is giving slightly more simpatico Mr & Mrs Smith meets Carla Gugino and Antonio Banderas’ characters in Spy Kids — makes abundantly clear, Matt and Emily’s cover is set to get blown in a big way, thrusting the duo back into the high-stakes world of espionage as their kids face the shocking reality that their folks may once have been cool.
Cue high-speed car chases, sharp fits, even sharper kicks, and enough electricity generated between Diaz and Foxx to power a small country as Matt and Emily find themselves in over their heads and absolutely loving it. And they don’t get all the fun to themselves either — there’s a killer ensemble aboard this one. Among the starry array are eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close, All Of Us Strangers and Ripley star Andrew Scott, Friday Night Lights‘ Kyle Chandler, Fleabag and Stath Lets Flats funnyman Jamie Demetriou , McKenna Roberts (Skyscraper), and Rylan Jackson (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves).
We can look forward to seeing Diaz and Foxx rolling, jumping, punching, shooting, rappelling, driving, flying, and basically just ass-kicking back the years when Back In Action hits Netflix on 17 January. Kapow!
