Deadpool & Wolverine nearly featured a crazy MCU twist that would have re-established the status quo of the cinematic universe. The film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in their respective titular roles, was a record-breaking smash success for Marvel Studios. Despite being a complete departure from Marvel’s typical superhero fanfare, an early idea for the film had the Merc With a Mouth become a vital part of the history of the MCU, breaking the canon for a laugh or two.
The physical release of Deadpool & Wolverine includes bonus features, including a behind-the-scenes look at the development of the film. Producer Wendy Jacobson revealed that during the early process of figuring out the story, the Deadpool sequel was going to feature a sequence dubbed the “Deleted Scene Extravaganza” which would have revealed that the anti-hero was in the “was in the #MCU the whole time.” The idea was to showcase how Deadpool was actually in the previous films, but was left out due to deleted scenes. According to Jacobson, the explanation behind his absence in the MCU was that “You just didn’t see his scenes. They were all on the cutting room floor.”
Of course, as we know now, Deadpool simply ended up being rejected by the Avengers and remained in his own timeline within the MCU multiverse. However, Deadpool & Wolverine could have been very bold by potentially shaking up the status quo of the MCU using the meta twist. Within the Deadpool world, it seems like a tongue-in-cheek joke that fits right within his wheelhouse, and would not necessarily be addressed in other MCU projects. The final result does make things less complicated, and more in line with the established events of the franchise.
Deadpool & Wolverine Could Return Sooner Than Expected
Considering how Deadpool & Wolverine has resonated with audiences, it would be quite shocking to learn that Marvel Studios does not have any plans for a sequel of some sort. The main creative trio, Reynolds, Jackman, and director Shawn Levy love working together and are already lining up a non-superhero project on the side. Kevin Feige already teased during D23 Brazil that he is always looking for avenues to bring back the two characters in the MCU. Although a sequel would normally be announced by now, it seems the future of the MCU will have the Merc With a Mouth involved in other, exciting ways.

The future of Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU have been given a very positive update from Marvel Studios Boss
The film did little to introduce the X-Men into the MCU, which makes the now-iconic duo the main mutant heroes of the franchise until further notice. The success of Deadpool & Wolverine is already making Feige contemplate bringing them into more projects in the upcoming Marvel slate. In addition to reprising their roles in Avengers: Secret Wars, a direct Deadpool sequel or cameo appearances in other films (or TV shows) is more possible than ever before. Deadpool may not have always been in the MCU, but he’s now a staple part of its future. And it seems Jackman is here to say as the franchise’s main Wolverine, putting recasting rumors to bed once and for all.
A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
