The now-canceled Game of Thrones spinoff featuring Jon Snow may not be shelved forever, according to the boss of HBO. Although Kit Harington confirmed that the solo series was canceled due to not finding the right story, it seems the idea is not completely dead just yet. Like Jon Snow himself, the spinoff might still get revived on HBO, but it’s unclear what exactly needs to happen for it to come to fruition. And judging by how the final season was received, the network will have to be extra careful the second time around.
The head of HBO Casey Bloys attended a press event for the network this week (via Deadline), where he addressed the future of the Game of Thrones franchise. In addition to the recently announced movie, several TV spinoffs are in the works at HBO, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. But there was supposed to be a very familiar face getting the long-awaited series he deserves. Although the HBO chief did not want to give too much hope, he didn’t outright shut the door on the Jon Snow spinoff. “Maybe we’ll try again,” Bloys responded. These words echo Harington’s previous statement that the project was shelved due to creative issues, and not necessarily forever.
So, it seems that everything now hinges on a story being developed worthy of bringing back Harington in the iconic role. It’s unclear what the mysterious Game of Thrones movie is about, but perhaps Jon Snow has a future on the big screen instead. No matter the case, Snow will be waiting there, ripe for a revisit. The last time audiences saw him, he was beginning a new life after being exiled from Westeros in the controversial series finale. The possibilities are quite frankly endless, so perhaps time is what is ultimately needed for it to finally happen.
The Jon Snow Spinoff Simply Didn’t Work
Though fans can now remain hopeful that the Jon Snow show can be revived at some point, Harington wasn’t so positive about it the last time he spoke about it. When he was first approached about the project, he was unsure about revisiting such a popular character after the divisive final episodes of Game of Thrones. However, he then figured that there might be another story to tell that would resonate with audiences looking for more about Snow’s journey. The development process lasted several years before eventually being shelved, unfortunately. His words:
” What I can tell you is, it was HBO that came to me and said, ‘Would you consider this?’ My first reaction was no. And then I thought there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt that there might be something left to say, and a story left to tell in a pretty limited way. We spent a couple of years back and forth developing it. And it just didn’t.”

With so many Game of Thrones projects already on the way, it seems fans will have enough to chew on until the Jon Snow series gets revisited. Although The Winds of Winter may never come out at this point (hurry up, George R.R. Martin), HBO is keen on expanding the universe after the success of House of the Dragon. The one fear that remains is that the franchise is stretched out thin and without good reason, but fans are eating it up so far. A Jon Snow spinoff would surely break the internet, nevertheless. It would also be HBO’s prime opportunity to right the wrongs of the finale, even though that would be extraordinarily difficult at this point.
