With Yellowstone finally returning to the Paramount Network to air its highly anticipated second half of the fifth season, the series’ creator, Taylor Sheridan, has teamed up with the country music sensation Blake Shelton to launch The Road, a new singing competition for CBS. Set to premiere in the fall of 2025, it will be the network’s first talent competition show since Come Dance With Me (2022), which has yet to be renewed.
Surprisingly, CBS has not produced a music-based competition program since 2001’s Rock Star, which starred Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston. Sheridan and Shelton will executive produce the new competition series, which will be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios, and Lee Metzger’s Lucky Horseshoe Productions.
The Road will reportedly feature several singers from across the country, on top of a prominent pop celebrity, who has yet to be announced. As they move from city to city, the singers must compete to win over local fan bases and secure their spot on the subsequent tour in a new region. Following CBS’ announcement, Shelton issued a statement expressing his excitement about collaborating with Taylor to create this unique singing competition. He said:
“I’m a big fan of Taylor’s incredible work, and I’m excited to team with him and my long-time collaborator, Lee, on The Road. I know a thing or two about singing competitions and what it’s like to chase a music dream and live life on tour. I’m looking forward to discovering new talent and giving them this platform.”
Addressing Shelton’s statement, Sheridan offered his own perspective on what viewers can expect from the upcoming series. In his words:
“There is a revolution taking place in country music. Building a platform with Blake for the next leaders of that revolution is an incredibly exciting venture. No more shiny floors and studio audiences. This is where the rubber meets the road — literally. Get in the van, go to the next town and win the crowd. Do it enough, and you become the next leader. Simple as that.”
The Road Brings Something Exciting to the Table
Singing competition shows often feature budding young artists seeking to showcase their talents to the world, but The Road seems quite different from the official logline. Created by Sheridan, who previously developed the biggest modern Western, Yellowstone, it should come as no surprise that the new series will be unlike any competition shows we’ve seen thus far.

Perhaps the program’s official description will provide us with additional details about how it unfolds. You can view it below:
“The Road offers viewers a backstage pass into the gritty and unforgiving life of a touring artist. With exclusive access to the behind-the-scenes workings of the music industry, viewers will see what happens when some of the best up-and-coming performers pile into a tour bus and tackle a grueling schedule in pursuit of their dreams.”
Aside from his monumental work on Yellowstone, Sheridan is slated to pen scripts for other interesting TV shows, such as Landman, The Madison, and 1923. Meanwhile, Shelton has been instrumental in the development of NBC’s singing competition The Voice for 23 seasons, only recently leaving to spend more time with his family.
The Road is set to premiere in the fall of 2025.
