The Penguin very quickly went from being “just another cash grab spin-off” to one of the must-watch shows of the year. Now, the final episode of the season has one of the highest IMDb ratings for a TV series with an incredible 9.7. This puts it in the same league as the likes of The Last of Us and Breaking Bad, which temporarily swapped places last year, and certainly vindicates Matt Reeve’s expansion on The Batman.
The Penguin has brought the iconic comic book villain to life in a much more grounded way than the usual depictions of an umbrella-carrying, bird-like character that has been previously depicted on screen by the likes of Burgess Meredith and Danny DeVito. Playing out like a version of The Sopranos with Batman characters thrown in the mix, the series hit the ground running and hardly missed a beat throughout its run.
Now, as the show closed with a brutal and awesome final episode, The Penguin has really joined the TV elite and really set high expectations for what comes next in the world of Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight when The Batman Part II arrives in cinemas in 2026. While it may seem like a long wait, there are not many people who will complain if the next time we see these characters is in another incredible addition to one of the most subversive comic book universes ever put on screen.
Colin Farrell’s Penguin Will Return in The Batman Part II
While there is usually a ring of secrecy around anything related to the biggest franchises, Colin Farrell has recently been quite open about his future as Oz Cobb. Although he had many complaints about the excessive prosthetics he was required to wear for the role, that doesn’t mean he is about to stop playing the role. In fact, it appears that he will be around for many years yet. Farrell told The Hollywood Reporter:
“I signed up for three Batman films, but I didn’t know if I’d be in the second film. There is a degree of almost delusion psychopathy present in the last scene [of the series]. So how is that taken up in the second film? I was told I have five or six scenes. I don’t have any hopes or any expectations. I’m really an open book… I do believe I know him better than anyone now.”

The finale of The Penguin lived up to the hype, but it did not feature an appearance by the Batman.
The success of The Penguin has only made it more difficult for fans to accept that other spin-offs from The Batman were abandoned before making it into production. At one point, a series centered on the Gotham City Police Department was in development, along with another show that was set to take viewers inside Arkham Asylum, but both have now fallen by the wayside. Over the course of The Penguin, audiences have been given a glimpse at what both shows could have looked like, as the storyline incorporated police corruption and Sofia Falcone’s harrowing time as an inmate of Gotham’s infamous criminal residence. By the time The Batman Part II is released, we will probably have a better idea about what comes next for the Elseworlds franchise – just don’t expect to see a Joker series as part of the plans.
