In a recent tweet, Bruce Kulick commented on KISS’ ‘dumbest’ lyrics.
“The lyrics of KISS have been perceived as controversial,” the guitarist wrote, sharing UCR’s recent article. “An article by Ultimate Classic Rock has recently gathered opinions on the subject. While I was a member of the band, I didn’t pay much attention to it. What’s your take on this subject?”
UCR writer Matthew Wilkening said in his article that his wife enjoys watching funny KISS videos after tough days. She laughs at the band’s silly and overly sexual lyrics from their 80s and 90s era.
One of the songs she chose is ‘Uh! All Night’ from ‘Asylum.’ The sample lyrics are, “Well we work all day / And we don’t know why / Well there’s just one thing that money can’t buy / When you’re body’s starved, feed your appetite / When you work all day you gotta Uh! all night.”
Another song is ‘Spit’ from ‘Revenge.’ Here are the lyrics, “Hot damn and lord above, I want a lotta woman with a lot of love / Well thin is in but it’s plain to see / It don’t mean spit to me / I need big hips, sweet lips / Make a man out of me / The bigger the cushion, the better the pushin’ – most definitely.”
One other song is ‘(You Make Me) Rock Hard’ from ‘Smashes, Thrashes & Hits.’ They lyrics say, “You make me sweat, you turn me ’round / You get me up, you never let me down / You make rock hard, baby all night / Love’s like a glove and it fits just right.”
In the comment section of Kulick’s post, fans usually seemed to defend KISS. “Everyone’s lyrics were cheesy in the 80s. No one minded much then, so they really shouldn’t now,” one fan wrote.
“They’re not wrong, lol. But I’m such a big fan, I don’t really care. I just keep on singing along blindly, lol,” another individual added.
Besides their theatrical performances, KISS also became famous for both their music and controversial lyrics. Their 1977 song, ‘Christine Sixteen’ had some disputed lyrics about an adult man liking a 16-year-old girl. The song faced criticism, and some radio stations refused to play it.
