The Penguin was supposed to be a limited series. But, as with many things involving Gotham (and televivsion more generally), more may be on the way regardless of what was said at first. So if you’re looking for more of Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti‘s critically acclaimed criminal antics, get excited, because more may be coming to the small screen soon.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Batman director Matt Reeves and The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc not only discussed how the series will lead into The Batman II, they also teased what conversations have been happening around a possible season 2 of The Penguin.
Will The Penguin Get A Season 2?
Are we going to get more of The Penguin? Short answer? Probably!
Long answer: it depends! It’s no surprise that Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO want more of the series: according to their November earnings call, the comic book-based crime drama has gained an audience that is on par with other hits of theirs, like The Last of Us and House of the Dragon. Reeves even acknowledged that the company was looking for as much from the beginning of development; critical acclaim paid to both Farrell and Milioti’s performances has only added fuel to the proverbial fire in the weeks since its premiere.

Still, Reeves went on to confirm to EW that conversations around what a second season would look like are already happening. “We are, in a very preliminary way — me, Lauren, [Reeves’ producing partner] Dylan [Clark], and Colin — starting to talk about what would be the way. For me, what’s really important is that we earn it. The idea of revisiting means that we have to keep that same bar.”
“I know that none of us wants to go back and just do more. We want to go back and do something great,” he explained. “So that’s what we’re talking about now. We do believe that there’s going to be something in there, but it’s just beginning. It’s exciting though. It’s very gratifying.”
“There’s an urgency,” on behalf of the studios, Reeves admitted, to getting more Penguin on-screen.
If you’re looking for more concrete timelines, though, you’re going to have to get in line alongside the executives at HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery. “I couldn’t tell you what the timeline is yet,” Reeves said. “There’s an urgency,” though, he revealed.
For now, the creators are pleased with how The Penguin story line leads into the forthcoming Batman flick from Reeves. From there, it will be anyone’s guess as to how they bring us more of Oz Cobb and Sofia Falcone. But as most things with Gotham, expect the unexpected, and always be ready for more. Until then, we’ll leave the bat signal shining on for you.
