The family of the former Iron Maiden singer Paul Di’Anno has shared the cause of his death.
Di’Anno passed away in October after battling several health issues in recent years.
Now, Di’Anno’s family has revealed the cause of his death with a statement posted on Di’Anno’s official Facebook page on Monday, November 11th. “Dear fans and friends, we have received permission from Paul’s family to bring you the news of Paul’s cause of death, after the results of the autopsy have been received. His sisters Cheryl and Michelle confirmed the following: ‘Basically he had a tear in the sac around the heart and blood has filled inside it from the main aorta artery and that has caused the heart to stop.’ Paul’s death was instantaneous and hopefully painless. May he rest in peace,” they wrote.
The statement ended with, “This weekend, an In Memoriam show was held at Underworld Camden, where many of Paul’s fans, friends, colleagues and family members came. With a magnificent musical set, his musical colleagues said a worthy farewell to their friend.”
As mentioned in the statement, a tribute show was held for Di’Anno at Underworld Camden on Thursday, November 7th. Di’Anno had performed there just a year earlier in 2023 and had planned to return before his death. The show included performances by Electric Gypsy, Gypsy’s Kiss, and Hi-On Maiden, They had been scheduled to support parts of a planned future tour with Di’Anno, but it did not take place.
Di’Anno sang on Maiden’s first two albums. Following his death, his former bandmate Steve Harris and current Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson both paid tribute to the singer, with Dickinson honoring Di’Anno at an Iron Maiden concert in Minnesota just days after his passing.
In recent years, Di’Anno faced health challenges, including two knee replacement surgeries due to motorcycle accidents. The accident left him in a wheelchair. He announced his retirement from touring in 2020 on his doctor’s advice.
However, after his departure, Di’Anno did not receive royalties from Iron Maiden songs and formed a new band called Warhorse. With Warhorse, Di’Anno returned to live performances, and the band released its debut album in July of this year.
That same month, Di’Anno had the opportunity to meet Bruce Dickinson for the first time after a Dickinson solo concert in Zagreb, Croatia. Di’Anno had been nearby for a promotional signing event for Warhorse’s new album.
