One of the highest rated action thrillers in the repertoire of Gerard Butler is now available to stream for free. Butler has become synonymous with the action movie genre thanks to roles in the likes of Olympus Has Fallen and its sequels, the crime thriller Den of Thieves, Plane, Greenland, 300, and more. But one of his lesser-known forays into the explosive world of action is also one of his most critically acclaimed, and you can now watch it for nothing.
Titled Copshop, the action thriller was released back in 2021, and stars Butler alongside another action icon, Frank Grillo, as well as Alexis Louder, Toby Huss, and Chad Coleman. The movie is now available to stream via Amazon Freevee, and finds Butler’s hitman tracking Grillo’s mysterious con artist to a small town, where they find themselves in jail alongside each other. You can check out the official synopsis for Copshop below.
“On the run from a lethal assassin, a wily con artist devises a scheme to hide out inside a small-town police station–but when the hitman turns up at the precinct, an unsuspecting rookie cop finds herself caught in the crosshairs.”
Copshop Has a ‘Certified Fresh’ Rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes
Directed by Joe Carnahan, who is best known for the likes of Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team, The Grey, and Boss Level, Copshop was met with hugely positive reviews upon release. The action flick stands at 83% from critics and 74% from audiences, with the critics’ consensus reading, “It doesn’t add many new ingredients to the genre, but action fans in the mood for an old-school thriller will be happy to buy what Copshop is selling.” MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman found much to enjoy in this “bullet-ridden tale of bloody betrayal” and heaped praise at the time on the “cast of grizzled action veterans.”
“Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo, sporting a man-bun no less, chew up the screen with their pulp, cat and mouse theatrics. They have a similar presence that Joe Carnahan wisely ebbs and flows. Neither actor outdoes the other. Butler’s “Bob Viddick” is clearly the most capable killer. But Grillo’s “Teddy” is a devious strategist that claws his way out of a corner by any means necessary. Toby Huss nearly steals the show with dark humor. He packs in barbed one-liners with a serious body count. There are no weak performances here. Every actor nails their characters.”

The actor will return as Nick “Big Nick” O’Brien in January 2025’s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and later as John Garrity in the post-apocalypse survival thriller Greenland: Migration. Butler is also expected to return (at some point) as the unstoppable Secret Service Agent Mike Banning in another Has Fallen sequel titled Night Has Fallen. Frank Grillo, meanwhile, has jumped from the MCU to the DCU as Rick Flag Sr., and will do battle with werewolves in the action horror outing Werewolves, which is due for release on December 6, 2024.
