The breakaway animated hit of the year is finally available to watch at home. After a great box office run, grossing almost $270 million worldwide, The Wild Robot is now available to purchase on video on demand. Starring Lupita Nyong’o and Pedro Pascal, DreamWorks’ newest animated offering adapts Peter Brown’s novel of the same name. After being abandoned on an island, a domestic robot finds itself caring for a young Gosling, and must teach it to fly before its species migrates for the winter.
The Wild Robot can now be purchased or rented through video on demand platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV in 4k Ultra HD. The film now also has a DVD release date. The Wild Robot releases on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4k Ultra HD on December 3, 2024.
Directed by Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch), The Wild Robot is the animated hit movie of the year. Described by one of its stars, Mark Hamill, as being as magical as Star Wars, the film has enjoyed rave reviews from audiences and critics, holding a joint 98% critics and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman called it DreamWorks’ best film since How to Train Your Dragon. They went on to say:
“The Wild Robot surpasses the highest expectations. Your heart will soar as a machine designed for human servitude learns how to love and becomes a doting mother to an orphaned gosling. She also transforms the lives of the surrounding animals by teaching them to grow beyond their natural instincts and work together for the collective good. A tear or two may be shed in a truly beautiful climax. Families are going to be overjoyed.”
The Wild Robot 2 Has Officialy Been Greenlit
With the major success of The Wild Robot, it feels like a sequel is inevitable. The film could soon be compared to How to Train Your Dragon in more ways than one, as Chris Sanders could deliver an all-time great animated trilogy. During Sanders’ conversation with MovieWeb, the adored director said he hopes to adapt all three of Peter Brown’s novels. However, “nothing has been greenlit so far, I think they’re waiting to see how this one plays out,” he said at the time. Sanders revealed he made sure that The Wild Robot felt like a complete story, just in case a sequel never happens. The director said:
“We were very careful to end this book where the original first book ends. I was actually a little bit nervous about that. I didn’t want to presume success. And I didn’t want to create a film that actually relied on another film coming along to complete the story. So it was really important that this film be a standalone entity.”
