While Kevin Smith might be known for View Askewniverse classics such as Clerks, Mallrats, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, he’s also been known to dabble in horror from time to time. 2011’s Red State was his first foray into the genre, and while that one was a straight-up thrill ride, Tusk and Yoga Hosers crossed the line into horror-comedy territory. From the sound of it, Smith is ready to give things another try based on comments he made on a recent episode of his Fat Man Beyond podcast.
Lasting a whopping 4 hours and 30 minutes – which is apropos considering the episode is celebrating the digital release of Smith’s latest flick, The 4:30 Movie – the podcast touched on a number of topics, including films that Smith has been enjoying as of late. As a longtime fan of Rosemary’s Baby, he mentioned the prequel which is now streaming on Paramount+, Apartment 7A, as one he really loved. It was during his praise for the movie that he revealed he’s currently writing what he calls “his version of Rosemary’s Baby.”

Kevin Smith Finally Has Some Heavenly News for Dogma Fans
Kevin Smith is finally getting his hands back on Dogma after more that 15 years battling to be able to re-release his controversial movie
“Another movie I literally just watched before we started doing the show tonight, is one home video right now; it’s Apartment 7A. It’s got Julia Garner in it and Dianne Wiest. It is the prequel to Rosemary’s Baby, which is one of my favorite films of all time.
I’m writing a thing right now, my version of Rosemary’s Baby
, because I love satanic cult movies. I’m a child of the ’70s, and a Catholic kid, so Satan, that’s like our Darth Vader in our f*cking space opera. So as a kid, whenever they were like ‘devil movies,’ I was like [screams].”
Smith would heap further praise on Apartment 7A, calling it a prequel that “dovetails insanely well” with the original. He’s not wrong in that assessment, either, despite what critics have been saying. Natalie Erika James’s entry is a tremendous companion to Roman Polanski’s film, combining the eerie atmosphere of the 1968 classic with modern techniques that work to deliver a fantastic movie from start to finish. And Garner and Wiest’s performances? Let’s just say we’d be surprised if they weren’t nominated for an award in the near future.
When Can We Expect Kevin Smith’s New Horror Movie?
Seeing as how Smith revealed that he’s still in the writing stage of his take on Rosemary’s Baby, it probably won’t materialize for some time. From there he’ll have to gauge interest in the screenplay, find funding, a studio, cast it, and all that fun stuff that comes before principal photography can even begin.
That being said, his next movie is already set, and will bring back his beloved characters of Jay and Silent Bob. Titled Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars, the film will focus on the pair and their weed dispensary going to war with a rival business. In a recent interview with MovieWeb’s own Will Sayre (seen above), Smith called it a “feud movie” in the same vein as the old MAD magazine comic strip Spy vs. Spy that he says is “legit funny.”
While he was hoping to get things underway by the end of the year, Smith did tell us that he’s now looking at a March 2025 production date for his new Jay and Silent Bob movie, which coincides with the 30th anniversary of Mallrats. From there, who knows? Maybe by then he’ll have his horror script finished and things in place to get it made. Either way, we’ll take all the Smith we can get, horror or not, as he’s hands down one of our favorite filmmakers.
