Action-adventure fans have been waiting a long time for director Chad Stahelski and star Henry Cavill’s Highlander reboot (at this rate, being an immortal might feel like the only way you’re ever going to actually see it), and unfortunately it sounds like we’re all going to be waiting a little longer. As per a report by Redanian Intelligence, production of the Highlander reboot has now been delayed due to Cavill’s new role in the upcoming Voltron movie for Amazon MGM Studios.
But, before you throw your sword into the air and scream at the sky, the report does reveal that Highlander is still set to go into production in 2025. The fantasy epic has reportedly been “delayed from January 2025 to May 2025,” with earlier delays being due to Stahelski’s reshooting “a very significant portion of Ballerina, the John Wick spinoff.”
On the positive side of things, the report goes on to state that “very early pre-production for Highlander has already started in September and should pick up as time goes on. Intended filming locations for the movie include Scotland, Italy and Hong Kong, meaning location scouting has been going on as well.”
Henry Cavill Has Teased His Leading Role in the Highlander Reboot
While details remain under wraps, the Highlander reboot is expected to follow a similar plot to the 1986 original, which follows swordsman Connor MacLeod as he discovers that he is one of a number of immortal warriors who can be killed only by beheading. After living somewhat peacefully for several centuries, MacLeod settles in New York City and is soon dragged back onto the battlefield when his greatest enemy returns to kill him and thus obtain “the Prize.”
Man of Steel and The Witcher star Henry Cavill will lead the reboot, and he has revealed that the movie will delve much “deeper” into the lore of the immortal warriors than any previous iteration of the franchise.
“I’m gonna have to answer that very carefully. I was a Highlander fan. They were great fun movies. Obviously, I watched them when I was a lot younger, and since rewatched. But also the TV show. I really enjoyed the lore behind it. That sort of sense of a tragic warrior, with more of a story to tell than just a cool guy with a cool sword doing cool things. And this goes even deeper into that.”

Director Chad Stahelski, meanwhile, has previously heaped praise on his Highlander leading man, revealing that the actor is eager to explore “the burden of immortality.”
“The character’s arc spans hundreds of years and he becomes many different personalities, all of which extend the timeline of his emotional growth. Then during our first meeting, my suspicions were confirmed: Henry was immediately riffing on the idea of the burden of immortality and you could see in his eyes that he can transform himself from being a young, vibrant soul to an old, wise soul. He had this combination I was fascinated by.”
